Meris Enzo Synth Pedal

I've been using my Future Impact (FI) in my funk/r&b band for a couple of years. I use it live for synth bass lines that I can't emulate using my analog pedal combinations (Cog T65, Wonderlove, Broughton germanium fuzz). Anyway I ordered the Enzo and gave it a brief test run at home a couple of days ago and I was unable to emulate a classic analog synth bassline. Not saying it can't be done. I'm all ears if someone shares some settings here. But as you pointed out, there are a lot you can do with the Enzo on bass outside of that context. Ironically, the most inspiring sounds for me so far is in the "dry" mode. The arpeggiator is also enticing - but I need to spend a lot more time with this pedal. There is a lot under the hood!

Thats awesome. Sounds like we are into similar stuff. I agree, i was unable to emulate an analogue bass line. I got very close - check my picture a few posts back and copy that. You will deal with dropouts though.

Safe to say that you can get those analogue sounds with the FI?

Yes. It's still digital, but as close as I've heard. Nathan Navarro and Zach Rizer have excellent demo videos on youtube demonstrating classic synth basslines on the FI.

I had 20 minutes with mine today. Dialing in a few different sounds, and like everyone has said it covers so many different things. And oh man is it ever fat! It's true Meris style - sounds awesome when it works, but needs some real attention to detail tweaks at the edges.

@AngelCrusher - I see what you mean by drop outs - it's a bit odd in the way the short choppy blasts are almost like a gated VCA... would have been a nice function if the sustain knob actually acted on the low limit for the filter, and actually sustained the note after the decay. I feel that's (from my perspective) a huge miss, but when it goes choppy in the arp mode its a cool sound.

Since we are revealing warts, the compressor in dry move above noon takes a complete poopie. Yes, I typed poopie. Really odd sounds from it. Pitch tracking is never an issue, but trigger detection is similar to the swell on the Mercury7, but improved. I can play notes down to D sharp on my low B, but below that it simply retriggers and acts overloaded. This isn't a huge deal so far tho. I will play with that a bit more later. The filter tweaking is touchy and the range at the ends is almost pointless - especially for a pedal - but it does get credit for being able to be triggered and hold a very long swell. With clever routing you could treat it like a freeze and play over top of it. I also see what you mean about volume. The effected signal is booseted booseted a good amount. Again clever routing can fix that by setting it to kill dry and using the mix accordingly.

The Mix knob does work well tho, you get a full range of blended, and there is never a worry about being too quiet really.

The filters are where I want to spend some time - run it through a few of my other ones to see how they sound - maybe a better filter control lives outside of this box.

More to come.

I can say this - if you don't like it you can get your money back and more on the used market. I saw guys still selling too high for $450, so I kept mine reasonably priced above MSRP to cover shipping and make a little extra (still well within current online market price) and it sold in 6 hours.

I'm still undecided, and going to try it a bit more. I'm really liking many of the sounds I bought it for, and running a Moog filter after it just kicks so much A$$. I've been prepared to accept a complex routing scheme and possibly using a volume control after it since day 1, and still plan to make my own triggered filter section. In other words this box will likely become the oscillator as main duty, and will see many of the other sounds get used too - itcs notitcs not perfect, but it does feel natural.

IF I do decide to send it back / sell it, I will be droppong the bass played synth search altogether and spending more time on the keys.

After some more time with it, I'm really starting to love it! It's super easy to navigate and sounds really good.

What I really don't like is how the lowest notes on a 5 string won't trigger the filter properly, as the low not causes an unpredictable retrigger. This sucks when trying to get some upper octave synth lines going with a low bass line. When it works it sounds absolutely killer, but that's like 1 in 10. Again, were talking notes below D# on a low B. It seems to have more to do with note energy than something like cutting the highs.

There's some adjusting to get the poly and arp modes to work well, but those modes are likely worth the time. Once you lock in and figure out the knack they are really cool sounds.

The filter in dry mode I feel is not as wide ranging as a synth filter should be as far as wild settings - there feels like extra space on the knobs that could be tapered better to make tweaking easier. The resonance will not self oscillate, the envelope control feels like it should be able to sweep a wider range, and the sustain cut off in trigger mode are about all that I feel shorted on. Otherwise, and here is the important part, the filter is actually really easy to use, and for the most part sounds really good. It's not going to replace my Moog LPF, but on a compact board I would happily use it in place. The sensitivity needs some more time from me, testing drive and comps before it.

It's a really fun synth pedal, and doesn't require a whole lot of fighting or technique changes to make it sound good. I noticed using a pick can really help the volume of the notes start with a sharper edge, making quick likes have a harder attack. Fingers can add a subtle swell to the notes.

I’m definitely keeping mine ..
love the sound , don’t feel it lacks any fat , no issues tracking

I’m mostly going to use it as having an invisible keyboard player that either double my lines or add ambient ...

I don’t use it through my bass amp , it’s alwsys on split mode and synth is going to my computer monitors. Didn’t test it in band practice yet (want to master it before I bring it in) but will try to plug the synth out to the PA. And it’s parallel to my pedalboard , I don’t mix it with any of my other pedals, don’t think it needs anything else ;)

I think it’s a great pedal for a bass player even though it’s not quite what we expected it to emulate ...

Funny , but I actually like the delay. since I don’t have one , and everytime I got one , I sold it a month later ... that little extra is kinda cool on some settings ...

At first I tried to find familiar bass synth sounds , wasn’t easy , but I started liking the pedal more when I was using what it does to get new musical ideas ... and it has certainly inspired me for new ideas

For me it all started when I asked for sounds that I posted earlier in here. I heard a few good examples that were close and got me excited. But the reality is that they just didn’t really get there. When you are looking for familiar bass sounds, its probably not the one, but as for splitting it out and using it in parallel - that’s something i can see it excelling at. The thing I like about this pedal is it can get a lot of sounds if you use it as an ambient effect.

I got the Future Impact today and this is MUCH more up my alley.

Meris I/O arrived today.
As usual , me and Midi will probably always have to fight...

From the test I’ve made , I think I am able to save presets and launch them with the pedalpalette , however ... the computer is killing me.

Got the Enzo to synth to Ableton live , but trying to use a midi controler (korg nanoKontrol) by mapping it to the CC commands according to the Enzo midi list , doesn’t seem to work yet ...

Everything’s on Chanel 1 , trying to assign the nanoKontrol knobs to the Enzo controls, I see the red light on the I/O box showing that data is coming in , but nothings happening on the pedal

What am I doing wrong ?!!

@_Angelo_

Hope you’re still around for a few questions ...

My midi chain is Pedalpalette into the source audio hub and from the hub to the Meris I/O.

If I set the hub to MIDI OUT with an expression plugged into it , it should send these commands to the Meris , right?! So how would I configure the expression if I want to assign it to the filter for example ?

Second question , would it be possible to assign the expression pedal to engage/disengage ??
I want to make a momentary switch for the engage/disengage , but my midi footswitch only sends fixed CC (96,97,98 & 99)

Thanks

Guys ... I need help
Every time I take a step forward I find myself tKing 2 steps backwards ...

Midi ... it’s a pain !!!

Got the I/O box , I have accès to the 16 presets with my pedalpalette, I even mapped the Enzo controls to a korg nanoKontrol2 , makes life easier tweeting ....

SysEx !!!! It won’t work for me .... I checked the connections a few times, I swapped cables to make sure no cable is being an ass ... i can’t seem to “record” a midi dump to the SysEx librarian.

Who has any ideas?

By the way , couldn’t find anything helpful on google/YouTube

TRS cable between Midi IO and Enzo?

Are you able to send sysex to the Enzo and see a change?

You have a Midi in AND a Midi out cable?

(just asking the basics, not knowing your MIDI skill level).

Check your sysex setting are on the correct channel, and that nothing else is owning it in the PC, like a DAW.

Did everything u said up to the last paragraph...

How do I check if “anything else is owning it”?

The simplist way to check is to restart the PC, then only open your sysex software.

Routing the NanoKontrol to it via a DAW, the communication from something like sysex might be blocked. I used to have an issue like this with my MIDI MuRF, if Logic was open and the VST was communicating, sysex was blocked.

Ok, did some tests ...
just some info about my midi chain :
Sound card Resident Audio T4 midi out to pedalpalette midi in. Pedalpalette midi out to Meris I/o midi in and finally Meris I/o midi out to T4 midi in. Both the pedalpalette and Enzo set to midi thru.

I remembered that the pedalpalette also had the ability to send midi and save on SysEx , and it works perfectly ... I was able to send from the pedalpalette to SysEx and back, but still nothing from the Enzo ...

Enzo is a fun little critter. @Alien8 , what did you do to get the poly and arp modes to function properly? I get some odd random notes.

It's all about clean playing, and sharp attack. Try a pick, I found it works best. You have to be careful of creating ghost harmonics as well. Sometimes - the tracking is so sensitive - the harmonic you play at the note you strum gets tracked, because it's loudest. It's one of the gotchas of good poly tracking, it hears every detail. Crank the sustain, it's really helpful in poly.
