Mesa Boogie M9 Megathread: Pt II

It is a strange pleasure knowing that my gaffe(s) might provide some measure of entertainment to others
I won't be going back to the TC however. I'll wait for the Bassic 15 and see how that plays with my Walkabout for the small stuff.

^^^lomo - the more I hear you go on, the more I think we're the same person. Same tone goals, same voices in the head too. I couldn't have said it better about the M9 v. MB8.
I get a great feeling knowing the MB800 is backing up the MONSTER M9 just in case. I can get roughly the same tone/volume. But, as others have mentioned, there is just something extra special about that dang M9. Best amp I've ever owned.

I agree. If the walkabout had as much under the hood it'd be my fave, but when all aspects of the head are considered (including flexibility and pure, unadulterated thwump), the M9 takes the prize.
What about a GK Fusion 550 as a backup to the M9?
IMO, it sounds quite a bit like the M9. Fairly heavy compared to the micros, but can be found under $600 used. Not a M9, but a killer amp IME/IMO.

Thought only the DB750 and SVT guys were the main love/ haters that continue to sell and buy back the same gear.
Perhaps this is the mark that the M9 will become a classic bass amp.

Hey, you can't blame me for your loss (not that I wasn't willing to help).
Of course, I'm predicting that the next time I chase a used M9 in For Sale: Amps it'll be "...and SOLD to that guy in San Jose!" Congrats to both of you(se).Unfortunately, now I've got these "savings" that "need" to be spent on something bassish despite my having a dang fine setup already. Hmmm....

My story so far.....
I bought a used M9 and it was the best sounding amp I have ever heard. It died on a gig a few weeks after I bought it used and luckily the great store I bought it from (Long & McQuade in Oshawa, Canada) set things right and ordered me a brand new M9 from Mesa.
Got my new Mesa a few months back and it has been perfect in every way..... Until tonight.
Sooooo.... I plugged in tonight in my studio to practice and the amp wouldn't work. No sound at all but powered up. After playing around for a bit, powering down, unplugging, etc.... I found the problem.
If I turned the compressor off, the amp worked fine. If I turned the compressor on and turned the ratio knob to 0, it also worked fine. As soon as the ratio knob was turned up a hair, the red compressor light came on and no output!
Before I throw this @$&?%#! thing out the window, any ideas? I don't think it is a fuse issue, but..... HELP!!!!!
I am really getting pissed as I just bought Mesa 410 and 115 cabs also..... Almost $3k invested in Mesa gear.... And the M9 is by far the flakiest head I have ever owned.
Please tell me I am mental and the answer to my issue will make me feel like a moron!
P.S. The Mesa in question was made on 7-7-11 and is S/N 1007.

Yours is way newer than mine, by nearly 500.

My thoughts exactly.
If it was completely toast, I would grab a slo blo fuse and Then worry after that didnt fix the issue.
At least I can open my Hiwatt or old SVT and look for something loose.
A M9? God knows what could go wrong with an amp like this. Methinks a 4-6 week trip to California is the only solution to this issue. If that is the case, I may just wash my hands of Mesa and grab a Fusion 550 or something fairly close tone-wise.
Really sucks to absolutely love an amp that costs serious $$$ and have problems..... Twice. Not good. AND I am super careful with my gear!

Tried it again and started playing around with the compression knobs after trying new speakons, regular 1/4 inch speaker cables, Mesa and Sadowsky cabs, etc.
When I started working the ratio knob up and down, it started crackling like crazy then started working. As I drove the compressor (hard slapping and pulling) it again crackled then made a crazy loud, almost feedback sound, cracked up again, then started working fine.
I will try it again in a few min, but this is very weird. Not even a bad pot should react so strangely.
Thoughts anyone?
