Mesa Boogie, Part 3

So essentially the mid control is linear cutting control (not boosting), and the treble and bass are boost/cut and in order to achieve a flat eq I need to have the mid all the way up, and the bass/treble controls turned down?

Pretty much. I'm starting to get more used to my 400's EQ section, but going home and tweaking my Ampeg with the regular tone stack is a little odd at times..

I really use the graphic EQ for any minor adjustments and find the para EQ to be more then enough to get my basic tone. I just bump up the low and hi mids a little bit to get my cab thumping and I'm set. I guess it works out really well for me considering I do have the graphic EQ on this amp, though some don't, and I could see that being a reason that some people don't like the Fender tone stack.

It just takes a little getting used to, that's all.

hi kids. i have a mesa PH 1x15 and ordered a second one from thomanns last monday and find out today that i was gazumped( someone got the last one before me) and they wont be having any more in until OCTOBER!!!!

Hey all,

I am borrowing my friend's Mpulse 600 and i can't get it to make any sound. He hasn't used it in years and is letting me hold on to it for a bit and try it out.

The power light comes on when you plug it in and flip the switch but no sounds. I have plugged it into my GK115 and 410 cabinets which are each 8 ohms. I have used both the 1/4" - 1/4" and the 1/4"- speakon options available to no avail. I used a variety of instrument cables and passive/active instruments to be certain.

The back panel says 4 ohms suggested, 2 ohms minimum. with an 8ohm cabinet, it should be just more quiet not silent, right? is there a special shutoff or something?

There has never been a foot pedal as long as my friend has had it and i have flipped every nob and switch on the front and back. If it was the tubes starting to go or being completely gone, you'd still get a little crappy noise right?

am I being a St00pid Idi0t? please help..... i want delicious sounds

Didn't see a mention of checking your preamp tube so it may be worthwhile to see if that's firing up properly or at least seated properly.

Personally I hate the "flip every switch and see if anything happens" troubleshooting ;)
so you might want to look through this to see what those switches do:

It's probably one of three things:

Effects loop jack
Input jack
Tubes

First, patch a known good instrument jack from the effects send to the effects return - if that "fixes" it, you have a contact in one of those jacks that needs to be cleaned or replaced...

Next, if it's one of the older models that has two input jacks, try both... If that doesn't work, try plugging your bass directly into the effects return jack - that will tell you if the poweramp section is working...

Lastly, try swapping out the tubes with known good ones...

If none of those work, it's probably shop time...

Also good advice...

I just wanted to pop in with the Walkabout tone settings I've been using lately. Bass and Mid @ 10:00, Para EQ flat, Treble @ 11:00. These work well for me for active and passive basses (with the input pad set accordingly). It seems the bass control is very good at masking mids and higher frequencies on this amp. It's a real ear-opener when you start backing it off...

fwiw;
I never use the active pad, even with my hottest basses.
I feel engaging it really effects the tone, and I don't need the pad.

I most generally have tone set:
bass flat
mids at 10 oclock
semi para:
bass trimmed a little at 30 hz
mids flat
treble boosted a little at 4khz
treble trimmed a little

+1 to NOT using the "active" pad,...ever. My Walkabout eq settings have not moved for years, everything at 12 o clock, except for the passive mid control at 1 or 2 o clock. Semi-para eq at 30 Hz needs taming every now and then, depending on the room, but not much.

my old 62 P bass has rounds on it.. and i vary the setting on that.
I have Fender 9050s of the p bass.. it thumps you in the chest.... they have a brite top that gives a scooped sort of sound.. but fit in the mix pretty well... and needs Mids boosted
The Mpulse is Usually set with Input at 12 oclock, bass@12 or 1, Mids @ 2 or 3-ish and treb @12 to 2.... give or take with dif cabs i may haul.. Uber115s, or 810, my small bag end...
I really dig the sound of the Mpulse.. I only wish it had more headroom... at 4ohms it sounds great.. .

Makes sense. P Bass with flats is what I'm running. Gives it a good oomph.
