Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

This is Mesa's strict policy. Dealers understandably don't want to go against M/B's wishes, so they do as they are told. I bought a WAS 1x15 that was a floor demo...I suspect the dealer gave me a break on my trade-in, as I had already told them I wouldn't pay a premium for stained blonde vinyl. In any case, I got the best amp around, hauled it home that day, and have been very happy.

Couldn't quit swing a new one and still keep my SVT-VR; then I found this from a guy locally. Mint (an unused backup amp) and still under warranty for a year or so. As someone suggested earlier, I put in a JJ ECC83s for the preamp and a JJ ECC803s for the driver. Very pleased with the sound. It sounds great with the SVT-210AV's; I havent had a chance to try it with my Berg NV610 yet.

I had been using a GB Shuttle 3.0 for practice on my own for a few weeks, and yesterday I went back to the Walkabout (both through a Bassic 15) and the A/B comparison was as striking as the difference between skim milk and melted brie

I go back and forth, also, depending on the circumstance. If I'd never played the Walkabout, I'd think the 3.0 was a good little amp. Alas! I have tasted of the apple.

There is really nothing else like it.
For me, Sadowsky active JJ>Walkabout>enough speaker to get the job done is pretty good.
Sadly, the Walkabout really needs another 600 watts to get the job done, as I much prefer it's clean personality to it's "driven at the edges" personality.
I very much like it for smaller jobs, and studio stuff. It's a great studio DI.

Although I don't own, and have never played a Walkabout, I do use a 300 watt Roland combo ( 115) in my big wedding/party band when I have PA support. I put it on a stand and tilt it up towards me, and it always seems to be enough for me to feel comfortable. Is the Walkabout really that anemic at 300 watts? I'm just talking about the head here, not with the Scout cab. I've been tempted to buy just the head, but comments like these always makes me hesitate.
I have FOH about 10% of the time.
The Walkabout can get plenty loud, with 412's or whatever.
On the other hand, I can grab my Teensy Lil GK MBFusion500, and 2x112 stack, and crush anything.

Plenty of folks feel differently than I do.

yeah, I get that, and PA support is definitely a must at 300 watts, but you are not the only one whohas wished for more watts from the Walkabout. I'm wondering how loud it would get with my LDS 212, loaded with 3012HO's ?
As close as I can get to that is two Baer ML112's.

A lot of the tone comes from the tube driven mosfets.

IME this will get you 90% of the way there, but for what I like out of the Walkabout, the only other source is the clean channel of a BB750 (or presumably a Titan, which I have never played) cranked to mild OD. YMMV.
If you've got PA at most gigs, a WA into a good 2x12 should do fine. I've used my WA 2x12 rig extensively, with PA support, and without at loud band rehearsals. I sometimes add another 1x12 for a 2.6 ohms 3x12 rig, and that's never let me down for volume AND tone. Unlike Chef, I don't mind a little grit, but we're not talking about full-on distortion, just that sweet "pushed" tube amp tone.
Using it to drive a power amp is just OK; agree that the driver tube and associated electronics add some character.
I've used the WA (and an SVT) into a TL606 1x15 as well as with a Dr. Bass 2x12. Neither amp gives me the clean headroom I'm after.
A pre/power amp or an SM400 have powered the above cabs with no problems.
I bet the WA would kill on top of an 8x10.
I'm going smaller cab and a more powerful amp (that is also smaller)
We play only small venues and I've never needed more volume than the Walkabout can produce through my SVT210AV's, but I can't help wondering...
The 300 watt all tube SVT through an 8x10" fridge is kind of the standard rock rig and people claim it'll be more than enough for anything. So should a Walkabout with the same wattage. I know the arguments about "tube watts vs. mosfet watts", but still. Did anybody A/B them trough the same speaker?
