Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

It did look nice, but I grew less happy with the sound over time. I discovered, somewhat ironically, the tone of that particular combination was what most here like, but no matter what I did with the eq, it always had this hairy mid-range-y snarl that I didn't like. Just too much of a good thing. I have found absolute tone bliss in the Scout 15 combo-cab. That said... I gotta' try a second one with it sometime.

Sorry, I was talking about your 15" version being called the "Dragabout". :D The one you have now, and the basses....

I had this custom aluminum head case made by TBer Speyer years ago, added the signature Mesa leather handle......foolishly sold it.....eventually repatriated it......and finally scored a used WA head (in addition to the one in my Scout combo) to put it to good use.
I wonder if Speyer still makes these.
I have my WA in the Mesa headcase and while it is very protected and looks pretty good, it does nearly double the weight of the amp.

I'm not sure he does-also, this one was not his "standard" model, which fits more snugly. I spec'd a custom one with added holes to attach the Mesa leather handle, broader clearance all around, and the vent slits. In addition, this one does not fit my current/ recently aquired WA head perfectly: 6 of the 8 bolt holes line up perfectly with those on the head, but the 2 on one of the rear corners are not installed as they didn't line up. Not a problem as the ones in the front are the thicker ones that do the heavy lifting anyway. Frankly, I really dig the aesthetics of it, and it only adds a couple of pounds, while not changing the footprint significantly. The Mesa head case was simply too bulky and heavy for me to groove on.

"Headcase"

It's not that heavy. It's not really a "microhead."
It's dead sexy.

Speyer-thing.
Had one to downsize my headcase.
Regretted it.
Good product. Big loss of sexy, to me.
ha, Chef .... at 60 and counting loss of sexy is a rapidly diminishing issue for me.
but, the WA does look pretty snazzy in the Mesa headcase

Sure is. An honest 300w into 4 ohms. ... even the 165w into 8 ohms is fine into a speaker cab that can handle it. The stock 112 WA cab kain't. .. mine would start getting flabby at 10.30-11 o'clock on the master vol. .. gain was pretty much always in the sweet spot of 11 o'clock.
Give that li'l sucker enough capable drivers and it'll get dang loud!
I ran mine at 2.67 ohms a few times - Berg AE212 + AE112 - and I couldn't get the master vol past 9 o'clock
Great Amp. I'll always miss mine.

Looking for feedback on your favorite 4 ohm, compact, under 40lb cabinet to go with my Walkabout.

I prefer the Walkabout with 4 ohm cabs, especially at lower volumes. Just looking for a compact, single cabinet, and I don't think their Scout Extension 15 is small enough (were I able to find one). So what else should be on the list to consider? Could be a 15, 12, 210, or other, so long as it is under 40lbs. Open to custom cab makers, too. Budget is under $800 (new or used).

Here's what I have tried so far:
Epifani D.I.S.T. 110
Epifani D.I.S.T. 112
Mesa Boogie Scout Extension 12

Did you not like the WA 12 extension cab? Did the Epifani's have the bottom that the Scout had (I'd love to know because I've never heard another 112 with the fat smooth bottom like a Scout)? Personally I love the scout cabs, and in your case the 12 combo cab would put it all in one box. I also have a Scout 15 combo cab but it's really hard to move (ceramic speaker) and it doesn't seem to have any more to offer than the 12. But I really love the Scout 12's. Other than that, the only other small cabs that make me want to try something else is Greenboy.

Are you the original owner of the Scout 15 cab? I ask because I've been told on multiple occasions now by Mesa that the Scout cabs were always designed the OEM neo speakers specifically and was strongly urged not to use any of their ceramic options. I wonder if the ceramic 15 is the reason you feel the 15 has little more to offer as when I first bought my combo and ext cab I felt the 15 had substantially more low end and output.

I've successfully gigged some surprisingly large rooms and stages with a 4 Ohm 12" WA combo, so too with a 4 Ohm 12" Scout extension cab using a variety of amps. I prefer it over the 15" if gigging because it stays tighter / punches more without the 15's extended low end so to me seems effectively louder. That extra low end doesn't really help in a mix or to hear yourself onstage.

I'd say that 12" cab is my favorite, however if that didn't work for you a good 2x10 is probably the best bet. Any good 2x10. It's a shame the new Mesa Subway series 2x10 isn't a 4 Ohm cab.

Never heard of Scout cabs having ceramic speakers. Sounds like an erroneous presumption or an aftermarket modification.

I’ve had a Scout 12 with both 4 ohm and 8ohm speakers and a 4 ohm Scout 15 (which I still have) and find the Scout 15 to put out MUCH more clean volume than the Scout 12. Oddly I don’t actually find the Scout 15 to be significantly “tubbier” sounding on the bottom either. It has a cleaner low-end that actually sounds less congested and less farty at loud volumes IMO. The Scout 12 at 8 ohms actually sounded better to me than the 4 ohm and had pretty much equal max output as well...
