Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I honestly don't know... only that it's the stock speaker. Seem like I remember reading somewhere (maybe here...?) the Scout 15 combos all came with 4 ohm ceramics. I might be all wet on that.

I can confirm that's not correct, at least at the end of the Scout 15 run. I have one of the last combo cabs and one of the last extension cabs and they both came with 4ohm Eminence OEM neo drivers. I replaced both with Mesa 8ohm neo drivers. My understanding is that the 4ohm drivers are no longer available from Mesa. The 8 ohm drivers are still on their parts web store.

^word.

Always happy, if not eager to be corrected.

If it sounds good, it is good...........

I had this custom aluminum head case made by TBer Speyer years ago, added the signature Mesa leather handle......foolishly sold it.....eventually repatriated it......and finally scored a used WA head (in addition to the one in my Scout combo) to put it to good use.

So after all this chatter lately, like I mentioned, I pulled the WA out of hibernation and, once again, was blown away.

I had an outdoor show on Saturday and decided to pair the WA with my incredibly awesome NV412. It just flat kicked ass and I had plenty of ooomph the entire set. My tone was some of the best I’ve ever had....just fat, warm and beefy Bass goodness.

When I got my Demeter, I worked with it to make it sound at least in the same ball park as the Walkabout (close as I could get it - good enough).
My go to cab is a Berg CN212 - great sounding cab (IMO/IME) that is rated at 700w. The Demeter definitely gets the most out of the Berg CN212 and stays tight and focused all the way up the volume dial. The Walkabout would just get too wide/unfocused/woolly with the Gain on 11 and the Master at noon (IME, this is about all the WA has for reasonably clean power .. more on the Gain takes it into grind territory, much more on the Master just makes it get flabby .. again, IMO/IME). Of course, the Demeter has 800 (@4ohms) honest watts available where the Walkabout has 300 (@40hms) very honest watts .. so pretty significant difference there.

I also fully understand that I can get way more out of the Walkabout with a bigger cab. I have an LDS 2x15 with Faital 15R400's and a Berg NV610 - both of which kill when combined with the Walkabout .. but I am really not eager to haul the bigger cabs very often .. particularly the 100+ lb, ceramic loaded NV610.

So, today after using the Walkabout again for a few weeks where I had good FOH for bass and pure stage volume is not a big factor, I decided to go back to the Demeter and twist some knobs and see if I could get more of the character and heft that I feel like I get from the Walkabout.
So far, its going ok with some adjustments to the Mids and Bass controls, but it is clearly not going to replicate the Walkabout feel.
Still a great amp though, just maybe not as great as the Walkabout ... and I still wish I could get the Walkabout goodness with more juice/clean headroom.

Same here... my WalkAbout/Scout 15 combo is *IT* for me. I'm considering buying another for a backup, in case mine needs service. I had an extra one, and sold it, like an idiot. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I recently sent the head from my 15" combo to Mesa for a good cleaning and they swapped out a few components as well (don't remember what). Quick turn around and cheaper than I thought it would be. I love the piece of mind knowing that the factory guys gave it the once over recently.

This may have been covered earlier in one of the threads, but I can't read back for three days. :D

Has anyone taken their (poorly designed) handle to a leather shop to get it sewn up? The leather is nice. But most of the handles I have seen on scout cabs/combos have threads hanging out all over (including my top handle on the combo).

Not yet, but that's a good idea.

I've been singing the loose threads on mine with a lighter as necessary. I thought about just ordering a new handle and saving the replacement project for a rainy day.

:D

Oh it's not that big! And that one is a looker too. (Basses ain't half bad neither.)

It did look nice, but I grew less happy with the sound over time. I discovered, somewhat ironically, the tone of that particular combination was what most here like, but no matter what I did with the eq, it always had this hairy mid-range-y snarl that I didn't like. Just too much of a good thing. I have found absolute tone bliss in the Scout 15 combo-cab. That said... I gotta' try a second one with it sometime.
