Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I still love that headcase!

Me too :-) I dig the industrial aesthetic, the upgraded handle and originality........at some point I may consider adding a "floor" plate with holes to accommodate a WD800, which would fit easily inside.....that'd be a reversible mod.....but for now I don't wanna mess with what is perfection for my low volume jams.

What with all the new WD 800 talk and seeing as how it was raining here today, I plugged in my old Walkabout red face and played for a few hours. Really nice to plug this thing in and realize how freaking great it is. It was also the first time I was able to hook up the 12 and 15 and experience the Walkabout in its full Glory. Anyway, I got nothing really more to say.

Are these your settings ?

So… My LMS (N'Stuff Music) got a WD-800 and I got a chance to check out. It's very cool, like the D-800 Plus. Very nice amp. But… it didn't feel or sound like my WA. For you 'clean' folk, maybe it's the answer. I hope so, but me… I'll stick with my WA. There's magic in that there box.
You didn't even hear a little of the original WA vibe in that new WD-800 with damping on low, a little top end dialed back, gain up around 2 o'clock and a touch of that passive mid past noon?

I won't get into particular settings. I don't remember. I dialed a bunch. And the cabinets were different. Truth be told, I didn't come away with the same, "WOW!" experience I had when I auditioned the WA. Maybe it's the tube gain stage before the output section… I dunno. It just didn't feel that similar to me. When I first plugged into the WA, I thought, "This amp CANNOT sound this GOOD!" And it DID, and it DOES! The WD-800 sounds good. Really. But I'm not going to swap it any time soon. FWIW, I tried to remain objective and let my ears decide.

Well we all hear things a little differently, even when we like or dislike something it's sometimes not for exactly the same reason...and we each need to respect that.

I'm just saying, it's not bad (by a long shot), it just ain't the same. We've gone back and forth for years now debating. And even Andy said it wasn't possible… so, it is what it is and I appreciate that. Truly I do.
I haven't had the opp to audition the 2x12… That's piqued my curiosity.
