Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

At least you got a new driver at the right price. And a better driver than the old one at that!

Not a lot of luv for those old Eminence Deltalite I drivers (or their OEM counterparts) They are, after all, 20 year old technology. Eminence modern neo’s are great drivers, seems like the go-to in just about every bass cab now.

It's the info around this page of the thread that prompted me to order the Eminence Neo - particularly posts #411 and #412.

Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

.

I suspect that you might be reading more into this than is really there. The DeltaLite logos come on a roll/sheet and can be added to ANY DeltaLite family driver. Having the logo doesn't mean it's a stock DeltaLite 2512.

I'm a glutton for conspiracy theories.

On that happy note, I'm off down the gym to get unbearably hot in the sauna and steam room - I'ts fekkin freezin' here.

In re: actually walking about with these, at one point Mesa sold a backpack for the 1x12 combo. I have one, but never used it.

re: different speakers, I've gigged the 12" combo, 12" extension, and 15" extension for years, swapped OEM 4/8 Ohm drivers at times, and couldn't tell you which speakers are involved. Will check just out of curiosity, but the difference IME is immaterial once a speaker is stuffed into those tiny boxes - especially the 12" combo - with the passive radiator, in a live room mix... never heard someone say a Scout cab lacked low end.

Backpack?!!!! Definitely have to see pics of that.

The Scout never lacked low end with even the original Deltalite, but definitely lacked clean low-end. Especially since the original combos had these in 4 ohm speakers, but that original Deltalite couldn't handle anywhere close to the amount of bass the Walkabout could put out at 4 ohms and would distort/fart out pretty early on the volume knob for me (even with an HPF filter and the Bass on the amp turned down). It just wasn't a good speaker for bass by modern standards. When I still had the Scout 12 (I switched mine out for a Scout 15 years ago), I switched out the 4ohm Deltalite with an 8 ohm Deltalite II and felt like the difference in clean bass was night and day. In fact I felt like the cab didn't even lose useable volume in the swap despite going from 4 to 8 ohms- I never really liked using it even at small shows before the swap, but after I did use it by itself confidently a number of times in gigs with a light-hitting (or no) drummer

Yeah that's deffo a conspiracy theory . . . :O

There's a backpack for the amp part, but the combo itself???

That's what I have on my notes. Different than the amp carry bag. Maybe it's a custom job, but my notes say "Mesa" though I may've used that generically.

Unless @agedhorse or someone else steps in to confirm/deny, I'll dig it out eventually as now I'm curious too. It's at the back of the gear storage locker though. Just noticed today I don't know where my silver face WA w/red printing is so taking inventory may be overdue. I can still find 2 out of 3 WA amps and that ain't bad. :)

Do you still use the 15? Can it get the same(ish) tone like the 12 but louder?

I'm a bit more than curious.
What we really need of course, is a pic of you wearing it, with the combo on your back.
Perhaps a little video, of you walking up a flight of stairs with it?

I wonder if they did one of these backpacks for the Powerhouse 6x10?

Your house sounds like mine.

I still have it and use it on occasion.
It is not the same tone, but for my uses a better tone! I would describe the 4ohm Scout 15 combo to my ears actually sounding noticeably tighter down low than the 12 combo- this could be because the speaker can actually handle the entire power of the Walkabout cleanly where the 12s were both limited and could muck up down low. The 15 has a cleaner/clearer sounding midrange to my ears too- possibly a bit scooped, but with the amount of mids available from the amp this is not a bad thing. I think it is overall a better cab, though there is some mojo to the way the 12 Scout sounded when pushed a bit that I’ve not really felt from the 15- the 15 though is useable at medium volume gigs without a problem and has the headroom to dial in a wider variety of tones than the 12

Best of all though of course, would be a video of the transition.

That's to say, from a starting point of the combo being on the floor with you standing next to it, taking us through the process of you attaching this backpack thing, and then picking it up and following the (presumably Mesa suggested) proceedure for getting it onto your back.

I reckon this would go viral on youtube . . .

I don't know anything about a backpack Walkabout, but that doesn't mean that it never existed. We do all kinds of one-offs just to see how practical an idea might be. I can't see this being all that practical myself.

Thanks. I no longer have a walkabout but I have the scout 12 8ohm extension that I use with a d800 preamp and a Duncan Powerstage 170 for low(ish) volume gigs. Thinking of getting a used scout 15 or the new subway 15 as the 12 is often just at it's limit - like the sound though.

How do you power the amp when it’s on your back???

Practical, no, but I've been at low-oxygen altitudes where the porters could've probably thrown me and my Scout combo onto their backs and not missed a beat. They'd blow past us uphill sometimes carrying more than their own body weight, every day, and have the full camp set up and tea ready before we even got there. I'm no Dwayne Johnson, but am in the gym a lot curling heavy bells so it's all relative.

To be clear I've never used the backpack and I meant maybe it's custom 3rd party not Mesa, though yeah Mesa's done odd things at times. I don't see "backpack" on my old order sheets, but those are by no means comprehensive and of course varied over time.
