True (I sent in an M6 for upgrades some years ago). Although, I may be hesitant to shell out money for repair, let alone shipping it back and forth across the country, when I could get by without using the effects loop. Only I was planning on running a Suncoast LM-1 in the effects loop. But you’re right, it would be in good hands and provide peace of mind if I send it to Petaluma. I will give them a call.@Willy B, I can highly recommend what Andy suggests here. I sent my (one of) silverface WalkAbout back to Mesa a couple years ago for the effects loop upgrades and a good going over. They will fix you up, at a very reasonable price, and you have the peace of mind knowing 200% it's done right.
On my older silverface WalkAbout, I keep a short 1/4" patch cable plugged into the effects loop all the time. I have on occasion cleaned these jacks, and both the input jacks with DeOxit and pipe cleaners. Just don't get crazy widdit... a little bittledooya'.![]()
I’m not sure if you’re advocating for, or cautioning against, using deoxit. The latter I’m guessing.Techs don’t like cleaning up messes inside amps, and it costs more if they have to.
Against using any substances, or screwing with the amp in general, which often causes additional problems (and cost) for the techs to sort out.I’m not sure if you’re advocating for, or cautioning against, using deoxit. The latter I’m guessing.
Got a line on an old red face 12 that doesnt appear to have any upgrades done to it and seems like its in fair condition. Anyone can give me an idea of price on this thing and what i should be willing to pay? i have no idea if this is a $400 combo or like an $800 rig. Help!

Damn. Ok. i know plenty of people love these things but didnt know they held the value so much!
Pound for pound for inch these are arguably the best heavy-duty bass combos (and some would say amps) ever made.
Certainly the stuff of legend.
Sellers gain a few dollars and a lot of regret.
I wouldn’t rely on a Scout 12 alone in a full band with a drummer based on my experience. I used one a few times by itself, but it required pushing the speaker to potentially damaging levels. The Scout 15 I have now has MUCH more clean headroom and volume on tap and has worked quite well by itself in a variety of moderate volume situations (it can carry a small room without PA support if your band is at moderate bar-band levels IME). Of course the 15 combo is pretty cumbersome to carry by hand though (weight and size/ergonomics), so it’s a trade off for sure. I’d love to get a custom combo cab built using Mesa Subway 15 speaker/specs- would pretty much outperform the Scout in every way I would guess and would actually be portable in a modern sense.Nice. Seems like there is plenty to read through on here about them. I was just looking for something that will be compact and loud enough for surf band I play in. Should be - if it isn’t it sounds like I could add another 12 or pop head out and run 4x10. Love the versatility

Long time Walkabout user here (10 years, give or take)...
I'm not much for distortions or overdrives, or pedals in general (compressor and tuner is about it).
For me, the combo+ext. cab has proven to be the perfect size rig for most bar/club-sized venues, and the DI provides FOH with magnificent tone when it's a bigger show.

Mine are the 12s - 4 ohms each, but I don't run "hot". They've done right by me (knock on woodAre those 12s? 8ohm or 4?
