Ah, screw it. Nobody likes the power amp idea. I'm just going to tear apart my M9 and my Walkabout and splice the WA preamp to the M9 power amp. Hmmm, have to make a new front panel, saw some pcbs in half....
Won't be the same.

Yeah, I was kidding. But I didn't hear you weigh in on using the WA DI out to a power amp? Maybe this has been discussed already, but it seems like most of the WA character would be preserved, and you could run any cabs you want.
I did run it to a powered full-range monitor, and it sounded pretty good...
It seems some distinct measure of the walkabout sound comes from that tube driving the mosfets.
The DI comes off the signal path before the power section, so you lose some measure of the Walkabout tone by going to a power amp.
We Need a 900 Watt Walkabout.

How about running a speaker level DI off of the Walkabout's output and then driving a power amp with that?
I could live with 600 watts.
I never used the headroom on my M6.
The "rationale" behind me wanting M900 power levels is this:
it would give you muuuch more grace in dialing in fat and clean vs fat and nasty...at the volume level and headroom of your choice.

JINGIES!!!!???? U guys must play with a LOUD stage volume!!
I used my WA thru my Berg NV215 & -admittedly we had a good quality FOH system & GREAT engineer. BUT............
it was not only THE BEST bass sound I've ever had, it was LOUD AS ****!!!!
I don't think I got the volume past 1/2 way. Gain about 12 oclock, master only on 10.30 at most.
So...............what gives???

That's just what I relayed (on behalf of my TB brethren) to a Mesa rep upon spotting their newly released M3 at last year's NAMM show. I got the not-unexpected "how charming, yet another amp/marketing expert in our booth" reaction. FWIW, I don't recall seeing much interest here on TB regarding the M3.
I've been considering a Walkabout head, but am leaning towards a TC Classic450, for the additional power, quieter fan, etc.
The Walkabout actually doesn't get much louder then with the settings you described. With the gain and master at noon, you are at max volume. You can eq to cut through the mix more agressively but you are pretty much out of headroom at this point. having sad that, at these settings the amp is stunningly loud, full, fat and altogether glorious sounding but many of us hate knowing that she can't give much more and would like a little in reserve.

At that point, all you're doing is tweaking tone, and towards a gritty overdriven palette i generally don't use.
With way more headroom, that's optional.

Remember that the setting of the gain knob is totally dependent on the input signal. While you are right that the Mesa master volume pots are that typical 'linear' design that results in 90% of the volume in the first 50% of the travel, an input gain control can vary an immense amount across instruments and players, depending on technique and instrument output level.
A gain knob should never be used to set volume, or as an indication of the max volume of a head!
I think Chef's description of the tone he's after matches my own. Loud sometimes, without gaining too much "workin' hard at this" edge to the sound.
If I were to use two Scout 12 combos together for loud clear tone, what's the best way? I've tried an AB/Y pedal with a pair of Ampeg B100Rs, and that worked. Would the Scout's DI allow for a slave setup where the DI of Scout 1 goes into the effects loop IN of Scout 2?

2 Scout 12 combos will NOT be louder than 1 with an ext cab for reasons previously posted. If you're already running 1 12 with an ext cab then that's different-get another head and ext cab, but you'll be hauling 4 boxes and 2 heads :-(
Best way to get more volume is simply a much larger cab (4 Ohm 410, 610 or 810) and you're done.
