Hi Guys! I'm new to this board, but man am I glad that I found it and this thread. Thank you all for the wealth of knowledge and information you have provided in my quest for a portable bass rig. Just thought I'd share a few of my experiences in this quest.
My main rig is this:
Amp/Preamp/Tuner: Markbass SA450, Peterson VSR Strobe Tuner
Cabinets:Mesa-PH212 paired with an Eden-D210XST. I also have a spare Mesa-PH210.
Guitars: 1-Musicman Sterling 4 string (not the cheapo Sterling line), 1 Musicman Sterling 5 String, 1-Godin A5 that I use for our unplugged shows. After purchasing the Godin, this is where my quest for a combo began.
Music we play: Everything from 706 funk to Tool and then some.
Our unplugged show is scaled down quite a bit, so I didn't want to lug a 60lb 210 cab and my amp rack, and my guitar. (Getting old!!) So Im looking to carry 1 cabinet not 2. Also, even though we consider the show unplugged, we do get a bit loud. So I still need to play over the drummer. Just the nature of the beast I suppose!
Thanks to the GC and MF 30/45 day trial period I was able to experiment a bit with 3 combos.
1. Markbass CDM102P - Got this as a Level 1 return from MF for a good price . Sounded great in my practice hall but got lost in the mix when playing live. For some reason, my Markbass SA450 amp sounds much better than the LMII head in this combo and I wasn't a fan of the cabinets ability to produce the bottom I was looking for. I returned it.
2. Gallien-Krueger MB115 - Tried this combo in GC. Wasn't a fan of the tweeter or mid response of this combo, but figured I'd give it a shot. Played an unplugged show that night with it and returned in the next day. Why? Tweeter VERY hissy, couldn't get the mid punch regardless of how I eq'd, amp shut down 2 times (was nowhere close to pushing it) and finally the XLR out jack is installed backwards. I plugged the house cable in and couldn't get my finger in between the cabinet and plug to push the release!
3. Ibanez Promethean 1x10 Got this as a level 1 return from MF for an excellent price. Man was I surprised at the amount of volume I could get out of this thing. Awesome design, but the tone is thin with when used as a combo. Not bad for 1 10 speaker though I must admit. Just for giggles, I coupled it with my Eden 210 and WOW. I could play our big show with this setup. The Promethean sound much better when delivering its full 500 into 4 ohms. Most likely because of Eden tone and the additional air I am pushing with the extension cabinet. Regardless, my goal is to carry 1 cabinet, not 2, and still get the bottom I need. So Im still searching.
Enter, WA Scout 12. Ive always wanted to try the WA, but was leery of purchasing a used one on ebay for $750 with no warranty! I lucked out this week and found a WA combo (4ohm) on the used GC board. I called GC and was told that the WA was purchased locally for a studio recording about 6 months ago and it was recently traded back for other gear. Apparently the salesman knows the person who owns the studio and states that he does this quite often. He said it is like brand new. New style black face and knobs, comes with remainder of the transferrable warranty (4+years), 4ohm version, not a scratch on it. Got it for $750 shipped to my door.
Well thats my story. The WA should arrive this week and Im really excited. Spent a little more $$ than I did on the Promethean, but Im expecting it to do a better job with matching to my Godin A5 and give me the tone I am looking for. The cool thing is that I will be able to A/B them. Again, my goal is to carry 1 portable combo to our unplugged show, but who knows, if I like it as much as you guys do, I may sell off some of my big rig and buy another for our big show! Thanks again and any help you can give me with making the WA experience a positive one would be greatly appreciated!
