Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Pt. Tres

if your preamp tubes aren't misbehaving (hiss, pop, noise) there's no good reason to replace them.
unless you just want to try some other flavors...and, generally, different flavors are a pretty small diff...

Yep I know Chef. Am a little like you & your experience with the WA. 12 oclock on the gain & the dirt starts & this is USUALLY where I set it- just at 12 oclock-so if I dig in I get a little tube 'harmonics', play soft & cleans up lovely!
I GENERALLY use a clean sound, but IF 'n when I need/want OD/distortion- I want it to be good!

Was just after a li'l more 'room' on the gain control B4 the dirt start in.
Besides - If I DON'T like the change I've got a Traynor YBA200 that I wouldn't mind experimenting with- as this has OLD pre tubes in it & they're Sovteks.

I tried a JJ 12AX7 outta another amp in the V1 pos in The YBA200 & I liked the difference in OD sound(I don't use a lot of OD, but on the few songs I DO use it, I like to crank it) eg. Temptations "Standing on Shakey Ground' has a lotta distorted bass kicked in towards the end, so I like to push it in this sort of aspect.

OK. I couldn't stay away. I have another Scout cab question. So, when you take the amp out of the combo model (12), it looks like the combo model enclosure must be a good bit smaller than the extension model enclosure since the extension doesn't need the room for the amp. Is this indeed the case that the extension cabs are larger? If so, that must affect the sound of the two in comparison, right?

Played through a scout cab not long ago. Had the must creamy, fat sound I've ever heard from a small 'solid state' head. Seriously want one.

Anyone run a walkabout with Berg HT/EX112ERs? I'd imagine they'd be a lovely match, tubey sound would go great with low end response and old school flavour of the 12s.

Now finding one in Australia from under $2000 is going to be a problem :(

GAS is getting me once again, and I need help. My current setup is WA head through an SVT 210AV cab with plans to add another.

Now here's my problem. I'm faced with a good deal on a Mesa PH112 cab that's very much tempting me right now.

I'm guessing these two cabs wouldn't play well together.

I have no experience with Mesa cabs, or even 12s for that matter (my local gear selection is shameful, to put it mildly).

Do I stick with the plan and get another 210AV or take the Mesa Kool-Aid and get the PH112 with plans to get another (or two)?

I say you buy the PH112 on the classifieds so that I'm no longer tempted. :D

Petersmith - I use a 210AV stacked on top of a 1x12 - homemade cab with a Peavey Black Widow. It certainly works FOR ME, and kind of the best of both worlds. I get a nice old-school deep low-end out of the 12, which sits "in" the mix as they say - and the 210 gives me a little boost in the mids to cut "through" the mix too when we do more high-gain stuff e.g. Immigrant Song or Plush and I need a little edgier sound.

BUT - it's not the tight-low-end that a pure Ampeg setup would give you, I think. Like I said, works for me for the classic rock and blues our band does. I've never tried the PH112 but from all the descriptions here I think it has even a fuller/deeper low-end than my 12. May not work for music that needs a tighter low-end.

Any chance the seller will let you try it with your rig?

My "Craigslist from Montana" excellent find: 15" Walkabout and matching extension in custom wine lizard! Looks beautiful, forgot how great the Mesa tone is! Paired up, here, with the matching Stingray 30th Anniversary bass.

The PH112, IME, is not a particularly deep cab.
So, while they might play ok together, I'd still vote for two 210AV.

I've run that rig, and it works well.

While I was under-impressed with a single 210AV, I really liked two of them.
I you liked the Ampeg SVT sealed cab thing, they're just exactly that.
I may work in louder bands than some folks though...

The shot of the 2 CS cabs and matching Musicman is truly oustanding bass porn. Isn't there a Pulitzer category for this????

My only problem with the CS beauties is that IME I am reluctant to take them out and muss 'em up. My CS 12 combo is pretty and it's a livin' room creature because of that. I have other gear (incl a WA head) for taking to gigs. The wood finishes on the Mesa CS site are gorgeous, but that's basically furniture that I cannot imagine anyone taking to a gig.
