Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

Hey I have been browsing through the Walkabout threads looking for something.

I read somewhere that some folks heard a difference in tone from the early WA's to the newer ones.I can't find that discussion-Can someone direct me to that discussion or fill me in as to if there was there any differences or have they been consistent over the years?

OK, I'm gigging outdoors Sunday and will be using 2 4 ohm cabs for the first time with my WB head. Nothing to worry about, right?

Right?:hmm:

I'm going to bring my BassBone just in case. I've run this head numerous times with 1-8 and 1-4 ohm cab with no problem.

I've done it a lot, with all three versions of the head.
The lone case I remember of someone having trouble happened like this:
He had the head positioned such that a heater vent was pointed at the fan.

"bad idea".........

I've noticed a noteable difference in the tone between some of the different tubes that Mesa has put in them stock (I had two identical WAs at the same time, one with Mesa Russian tubes and one with Mesa Chinese tubes), but the amps themselves sounded identical to each other to me when I tried switching the tubes between them. One difference that was recently noticed is that they changed the EQ sweep of the knobs for the parametric EQ for a short time for some reason (both of mine were from the period in the middle with the different sweep). But when set flat they should probably sound pretty much the same...

Ouch! Poor little thing. I'm going to buy a beach umbrella so mine stays cool and shady.

FWIW I had a blackface that I ran at 3 Ohms numerous times (Epi UL2 310/210 stack) and it handled it fine. But about a year and a half later, running at 8 Ohms, it failed and the power section had to be replaced. I have no idea whether the 3 Ohm stint played any role in the power MOSFETS demise (apparently 2 of them were blown), but juss sayin'.

IMO this is the more likely explanation. If the 3 Ohm load was the cause, I'd have expected the unit to fail during or soon after operation at that load, but I'm no 'lectronic injuneer, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night.....

I had posted in the past that the only time that my WalkAbout would seem to run hot was when I was pushing an 8-ohm load. I'm not sure why that is, other than perhaps I had to make it work harder to get the volume out of an 8-ohm load, but I only had two occasions where I touched the amp and noticed that I could fry eggs on it, and both times, I was running a single 8-ohm cab. It never did shut down, though.

So...you're saying yours ran hotter at 8 ohms than at other, lower ohm loads?
Not debating, just asking?
I very, very seldom ran mine at 8 ohms, and I don't remember anything about how it reacted to that....

I used my head with a single Diesel 115 sometimes...I have no recollection of what this did to temp, but I'd think I'd have noticed if it did something extreme...

So, the gig was great and the head pumped full power with no problem. Vol @ 10 o'clock and master at Noon into 2-4 ohm Dr. Bass RxL cabs, a 210 and 115. I really liked these cabs, just got 'em. One more success story:bassist:

Really like my Mesa Walkabout, great little amp. However, the fan noise bugs. I'd appreciate if somebody could share a model number of their (quieter) replacement fan. I've included a pic that shows the fan in mine.

You'll have to search through prev. editions of this megathread. TBer Vic posted his replacment fan, and IIRC there are other posters as well.
