Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

Lately I have been messing with the eq and moderately overdriven side of my WA....gain at 1 or 1:30, slightly boosted at 40 Hz and 200 Hz through the Audiokinesis TC12: WOW.
I am so entheused with this cab that I ordered one of Duke's yet to be released TC15s in a 4 Ohm configuration. That will replace my 8 Ohm LDS 15-6. I also had the crazy thought of building the ultimate WA rig (for me): a pair of 4 Ohm TC cabs and 2 Walkabouts. Imagine the tweakability of 2 heads (1 overdriven and boosted in the mids and the other clean and boosted at 40Hz).

So far for me, my Walkabout has been the most lethal and gorgeous sounding through a pair of Mesa PH115 cabs. I quite like it through my Schroeder 1212BMF (212) cab and of course the Scout cab sounds amazing if not pushed too hard. I am really on the fence about keeping my Schroeder which is a bit boxy and ganky sounding, or going for one of the follwing options:

1. a Scout 112 extension cab
2. a pair of PH112 cabs
3. a pair of GK Neo112 cabs
4. adding some bracing and batting to my Schroeder to warm it up.

Yup. It's happening. Duke says the TC112 and 115 will play well together as the bass freq are tuned to within 1 Hz of eachother. In theory I could run both with a single WA at 2 Ohms, but I like the idea of 2 WA heads each running a single 4 Ohm cab and individually tweakable, with a passive ABY splitter. To cool f/ school........the hitch is that in order to fund another WA head (and part of the TC115) I "should" sell my M9(in addition to the LDS 15-6).....not sure I'm comfy with that. There's also the fact that I might get lost inside my own brain with all the possible tonal manipulation.....gotta sleep on it.....

Well, when one justifies to oneself selling things like a Marshall Major in near mint condition, and perhaps an impressive group of vintage guitars (Strats, Les Paul Jrs and a very sweet '63 Gibson Byrdland) and guitar amps because it seemed to make sense at the time and then repeatedly regrets it over the course of say 30 years, one might be moved to make the comment that I did... :bawl:

I'd lean toward a Scout extension cab. It seems 90% of the gigs I do can be handled by my Scout 12, particularly since I usually have the DI to the PA option. I do have a PH212 and a PH 210 that get little use, even though they sound magnificent. I should probably sell them and pick up a Scout 12 extension, but damn they sound good!

I have been using my scout 12 for most of my gigs as well and add the radiator 12 for my rock cover group. It's nice to add the extra cab for the louder stage volume of the rock drummer and guitar. I haven't felt the need for more power. I don't know what the efficiency #'s are of the Scout 12 or the Radiator 12 but they must be pretty good. The Radiator 12 extension has a 10" down firing passive woofer as opposed to the Scout 12 8 in passive. I haven't done any serious sound comparisons yet to note if there is any difference but if there is, it subtle.

So I think this is the place to ask it...but I'm thinking about replacing the preamp tubes in my WA, but I don't really know what to expect.

Currently it has the stock tubes in it, which I do enjoy, but I'd like to help out the top end a bit in it.

Any advice would be great!

Search back a bit. Some have experimented quite a bit, and the WA character will change meaningfully with different tubes.

"tube swaps"

The Walkabout does reflect the character of tubes that are in it.
The best thing you can do is buy several sets of quality tubes and see what you personally like.
JJ, Tung Sol, Telefunken are some good brands to try.
