Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

The Walkabout has always seemed fairly cab friendly to me.

I had an NV215 for about 1 gig: too dark and sloppy down low for me.
That's the beautiful thing about being a bassist right now: plenty of great choices for one and all!!!

Search back a bit. Some have experimented quite a bit, and the WA character will change meaningfully with different tubes.

"tube swaps"

The Walkabout does reflect the character of tubes that are in it.
The best thing you can do is buy several sets of quality tubes and see what you personally like.
JJ, Tung Sol, Telefunken are some good brands to try.

Thanks guys! I tried to use the search function but it wasn't working for me last night for what ever reason.

I'm curious to see how this plays out!

My Walkabout is the most versatile rig I've ever had. I use my DB through it, a Jazz and P bass with flats. Sounds great and works with them all. I have to say that the two Fenders don't like the same settings. Odd....

If the 12" Scout Cab isn't enough, I've got an NV610 to really get some air moving. It's got more kick than my Skunkworks SVT. Well, maybe not, but it's got more headroom.

Here's a link to down load a clip of my new swing band, live at The Bridge, in Columbia, MO.

1961 King/Thomastik Spirocore Mittles/K&K BassMax/K&K two band pre/Walkabout/LDS2x8+5

The engineer mic'd the cab, and took the di and "ran about 80% DI with some cab blended cause it sounded damn good too.

Considering it was our first show, and getting a 10 piece band firing on all cylinders can be like herding cats, I'm pretty dang happy with it. I think the horns could be a bit more present in the mix, but hey, it's free;)

So just a slight update... I dropped some JJ 12AX7's in my WA. Wow that's quite a difference in tone.

Really tightened up the bottom and cleared the highs up. Took a bit of the mids out, and gave the amp a bunch more head room in the input gain stage. Which isn't exactly great for me as I like a bit of grit to get some real growl out of the bass, but I'll take it for the tightened lows and better highs.

Love it man! Fun song, killer tone!

If any of you are having trouble with the download; pm me your email.
Cause, like, I downloaded it, so, I could email it to you;)

Though the song is only ~2 minutes, it's a fairly large file, and took me about 5 minutes to right click and download after I sent my email to the host server to get the download link.

Im thinking about getting one, but i want to use it as it is, the combo, does it provide like it is enough clean volume for a Double Bass? i dont play at very loud volume, but i really dont want distortion in my bass sound. does somebody use it only as a combo without an extra speaker? does somebody compared it with an ampeg B100R volume wise and tonewise?
thanks in advance

Nuno

While I don't have the combo cab anymore, I did use it, alone, with my jazz band, on doulbe bass, for many years.
It was loud enough for me; but that's always nearly impossible to answer for anyone else.
How loud is loud?
How loud are your bandmates?

I was playing in a group with bass, drums, guitar, sax and piano. We used one Bose stick/sub, and mic'd the vocals and sax only.
The drummer and guitarist were among the best for playing respectfully and dynamically.

YMMV.

I use a custom built Low Down Sound 2x8+5 now.

Update on the sound clip:

I tried to email it; and at 57meg, it's a lot bigger than the 25meg limit on my gmail.
Y'all will have to download it if you want to hear it, unless someone smart'n me wants to download it and host it or some such thing.

Thats what you get for writing at 2 in the morning..ahahah
i wanted to ask if in a real music situation, the combo by itself its usable, if actually somebody uses just the scout for playing live, sure this is so subjective, what might be loud for me can be a soft pillow for others, i guess i just need an excuse to buy one..
did you have Low Down Sound make a special cab so that you can mount the walkabout like in a combo or you just use the head on top of the cab?
i divorced recently and my ex got the car, often i travel with train and so, i need to use a combo, something i can carry with one hand only, cant carry extra bags , nothing.

About the song Chef, it really sounds great, i often play that song when i have to sub for a French Jump Blues band, its really a great song and the audience seems to love it.
the bass sounds really nice and round although sometimes i can really hear the spirocore sound on the top end, and being a gut / synthetic guy thats not really my cup of tea, but the bass sits wonderful on the mix.... (maybe i have to send you some used strings i have around and try to convert you to no metal? ahahahaha)
thats a nice band you have there for sure.. congratulations.

last week at practice, I started getting a little hum through my rig--a Walkabout head with two Ampeg 210AVs stacked--whenever I wasn't touching the strings of the bass that was plugged in. This was with both my Fender '57 RI and my Lakland HB w/Dark Stars. In addition, I got a little static from time to time while I was playing either bass. My Fender P (strung with rounds) also sounded a bit thin and grindy--I blamed that on the really low setup I had at the time, I was getting fret buzz. (Didn't have the right tool with me for adjustments.) BUT maybe the P sounds grindier now by comparison because I just started using the HB (strung with flats, and it sounds incredibly deep) at practice.

Remembering the issues folks have had in the past with the effects jack on the WA, I stopped off at GC today to get some Deoxit before practice, but they were out.:hmm: At practice, I experienced the same issues as last Sunday. The P sounded the same, even though I raised the action to get rid of the fret buzz. And the hum and occasional static were still in evidence.

Sooo, I brought the WA home tonight (it normally lives at the practice space) and plugged it into my Aggie DB410. Voila, no more hum or static! Now here, I started thinking about the issues a few people have had with the Ampeg 210AVs, but they have only had those problems when using the Micro-VR head, too. In addition, the Fender P still sounds grindier than it should through the WA. It sounds more full and rich-sounding through my Ampeg V-4B. (In the past, the two amps' tones have not seemed this dissimilar to me.)

Next steps: I'm going to try a couple other basses strung with rounds through the WA/DB410 combo at home to see if I notice any difference from before. And next Sunday, I'll lug the DB410 to practice to see if the hum and static show up at the space through that cab. (It's a pretty nice rehearsal building, so I'll be surprised if the wiring is an issue.)

Sorry for the long post, I'll update as developments occur.
