Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

Mine is the same model & the tubes are fine. If u notice out getting dull sounding, or not getting hardly any headroom before O.D.kicks in, that CAN be a sign.

Mine was sounding a little weird, so I swapped positions of the existing tubes and it made a noticable improvment. I left the mesa tube in p1, and put a tung sol in p2. That's the second replacement tube in 6 years.

You are probably right but I will probably give it a try anyway. Reggae is a pretty forgiving genre as long as it is loud and deep.

I'm thinking on getting the 8 ohm cab so I can use it with my b15n too.

Raggae? Big lows are greatly facilitated by big watts. Although the WA is my fave head, I strongly suggest you pump at least 500 watts into the TB153 to really get it going, esp if you boost lows. That cab can take it with a smile, but will not be breaking a sweat at 300 watts, and boosting lows will suffocate your headroom IME.

I don't really boost lows. I just use flats and roll off the tone control on my Jazz bass.

I guess it really depends on how loud you want to be. If you run through a PA with good subs or the band isn't overly loud it's cool. If you want to carry a medium room and make everyone's spleen vibrate then trying a TB153 with a load of watts would be worthwhile, though:bassist:.

So my experiment of trying the Walkabout with all my cabs is underway. Last night I ran it into my Epifani PS210 (8 ohm). Next week at the same Tue night gig, I will try it with the PS115. I wish they were 4 ohm, but at least I can get a good idea of the tone.

I used my freshly restrung (Dunlop nickels) Sadowsky Will Lee. Being ash/maple, it is brighter than my NYC alder one that I usually use with this band. However, my sound wad much darker and warmer than my normal setup with the 2 GK NEO 112 II's. I found myself adding a little more horn than usual (11:00 instead of 9:00).

The bigger, heavier 2-10 had plenty of booty and I found I used a touch less EQ than normal on the WA. I am curious to run everything exactly the same next week but with the 15 instead.

I did like the single cab setup as the bar opens up about 15m before the set time and we switch out with the next band quickly. Now, I just wish so many cabs like the Berg AE210 and GK NEO 210 and 212 were 4ohm boxes. One thought is to put in new speakers in one of these Epi's to make it 4 ohm. Not sure.

Nola-a few more details please:
PA or not? General idea of band volume?
Thx

No PA except for vocals, keys, and kick drum. It is not a big room and you have to be careful with volume. It is an old building in the French Quarter, corner, glass on one side, brick walls and old floors that are almost like cobblestones. Thus, it is really easy to be too loud. Drummer uses a jungle kit, both gtrs with combo amps.

A single cab solution is def going to be enough for me most of the time in this band. The question is which. I think something like an 4 ohm 2x10 would cover me 90% of the time in this band.

I thought the Epi PS210 was good but it seemed a little darker than I thought. Of course, that is partly just getting so used to the GK NEO's. Granted, when
I first got the GK's, they seemed a bit harsh. Shows that what you are used too colors your view a bit.

Not to dis the Walkabout here, but, if you can, you really oughta try the MB-F with one of the neo112's. I think it might do what you want. I've covered some fairly big rooms with that, much to my surprise.

Not the first time I've been called a heretic!

First he posts a pic of his Alleva Coppolla in the Sadowsky club and now this!!!!! ; )

In all seriousness, I am curious why you'd steer me that way? I think the Walkabout can handle all my gigs with this band (and I love the sound of this amp). My thinking was if using a single cab, go 4 ohms to run at full power so to speak. The one cab size I was hesitating to use is a single 12.

I'm always surprised at the number of gigs I can cover with a Walkabout in the Scout 12 cab. I've used the WA with a PH212 and that works great, but most of the time the Scout cab is more than enough. But then really loud ain't our thing. And obviously a single cab rig is a good thing on load in/out.
