If you look at how the amp is mounted into the Scout combo it covers the gaps on the sides of the amp. On the older units the sides and top are the only vents. Even with mine and the extra venting on top of the head, when mounted in the scout most of the heat is directed out the right side of the amp when viewing the amp with the cover off.The cover sits flush against the head, and doesn't direct airflow anywhere, that I can tell.
It appears to me that air is supposed to exit out the front slots...
I always preferred them stacked vertically (tall), rather than horizontally (side-by-side).
I almost always trim at 50-60hz to keep the low end under control/tight.
The stock fan seems to move much more air than the top vents alone could allow. Most of the heat is then forced out the sides as seen in my brutal paintbrush pic here:
Here's my Scout with the cover off to illustrate the air gaps on the sides:
If you look on the bottom of the Scout where the amp sits you'll see square holes on either side. That's where the most of the heated air is expelled when the cover is on:
Since I added the straps I think the most notable improvement in the air flow is actually allowing the heated air to escape out the right side at the top as opposed to being directed down the sides to where the fan can suck it back in. That's where I feel the most heat and air flow on mine with the cover off.
