Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

Just a little success story: I've toured all spring/summer with only the Walkabout 12" combo. I was worried about playing big fests like Wakarusa and Bonnaroo and even some bigger gigs we had at Bowery Ballroom and what-not because I hadn't tested it out in bigger rooms and outdoors. But mic'd up and running the DI fairly hot it sounded amazing. The sound engineers were pretty blown away that it could do that. Which leads me to my next question: what mics have you guys tried with it and which ones worked the best for your tastes?

Here's a link to down load a clip of my new swing band, live at The Bridge, in Columbia, MO.

1961 King/Thomastik Spirocore Mittles/K&K BassMax/K&K two band pre/Walkabout/LDS2x8+5

The engineer mic'd the cab, and took the di and "ran about 80% DI with some cab blended cause it sounded damn good too.

Considering it was our first show, and getting a 10 piece band firing on all cylinders can be like herding cats, I'm pretty dang happy with it. I think the horns could be a bit more present in the mix, but hey, it's free;)

Click on the link and follow directions. Feedback welcomed.

I usually use my phone or work computer to cruise TB but I just got to check this out on my main computer with a decent sound system. Nice warm bass sound. I like that the bass is out in front in the mix and easily heard. Sounds like a fun group to gig with. Thanks for the ear candy Chef!

Great story! It's an amazing li'l combo ain't it?
I'm gonna try it where I usually use far more wattage, & 2x12"s. See how it handles it. There's a PA for FOH, so it's only gotta ' monitor ' me really, but it's a loud environment-hard hitting drummer & horns etc...
I think it'll do it fine.
Sorry,I can't help too much re mics. Our S.E. uses Sennheisser 'something or other' & sometimes simply a Shure SM57 along with the D.I.

Thanks for listening!

You might think about putting the Scout on top of your 212 then...

I've used both a Shure Beta 52A and an AKG D112 with good results. Primarily because that's what was available. Anymore I just go with the DI out only. Works for me!

Hey guys, I've had my walkabout for about a year and a half. I was wondering about the extension cab; what kind of gig would I be playing for it to be a necessary addition to my rig? I've played a fair amount of different bars and I've never had a problem with being heard.

I just picked up a V1 Bottle Rocket today and I am amazed at how at a low gain setting, it can make my GK MB500 sound amazingly like my Walkabout! Amazing pedal. Almost like its the front end of a Walkabout!

Man, I'd recommend the Scout cab if you can find a good deal on one. I know a lotta the fellows on here run it at 2.whatever ohms and it runs fine. Plus it sounds awesome just moving that much more air. The only issue I ever had running a 4 ohm WA head was the thermal shutoff after I had it on for 2 or 3 hours. The issue being myself, haha. I was unsure whether I would have the same issues as a tube guitar amp: needing to warm it up and not continually shutting it off and on, which, of course, is not good for tubes or so I've heard.

IME, particularly loud guitar or drums on boomy stages test the Walkabout. After a point, it doesn't so much get louder as it gets more overdriven (which, if anything hurts intelligibility).

For most of the gigs for which I use the WA, a single WA 12" combo works well. For the others, depending on the gig, I'll either stack two Walkabout combos, put one combo on top of a Carvin LS1503 (for more overall volume and to get the Scout 12" closer to ear level), or simply run the head through a bigger cabinet (in my case, usually a Schroeder 21012).

That said, if you've been going for 18 months of gigs w/ no trouble, then maybe you're all set.

I know has probably been discussed a lot and i have read a lot of posts on it but i wanted a definitive answer, has the loud fan issue been addressed to any degree in the blackface models?

Thanks for help

AND: just to put this to bed - can someone PLEASE give me a # or a link to the best PROVEN quietest fan they know of for the WA. I'm in Canada so it's not always a simple find.
Thanks a bunch.
B.

Hey I'm in canada too.

I have read up on fan swap outs however I can't solder and would rather Mesa just fix the issue lol.

I am pretty 95% sure you can use any fan you like as long as it's a standard 82 mm case fan, you will just need to cut the wires of the old fan, and cut off the adapter of the new one and solder it on. So anything you find online will work, the more it moves the better so you'll have to optimize air flow and noise level for your needs.

Nope; it apprears to be the same sunon unit they're always used.
I don't believe they think it's an issue, and, it's not, to everyone.
