I get to play with a lot of amps, and from a pure tone perspective, the WalkAbout is still probably my all-time favorite (not including all-tube heads). It is also extremely versatile. There are a huge range of killer tones in there!

It's a quality bag fer sure. Tight too.
I've been using mine quite a bit lately & it's loosened up a li'l.
I've got the loading of the amp down pretty well & it's working well.
I'd rather have a great quality 'tight fit' than a poor quality one of any type.
So, I'm happy!

Why do I like the Walkabout?
Because it's like a Patrick Swayze 'Roadhouse' kick in the gut.

I've been thinking of picking up a Walkabout. With 300 watts into the right efficient set of cabinets could the Walkabout be enough for a rock band in club where the guitar player is using something like an over driven Marshall Blusesbreaker or does it just hang with a jazz drummer type of thing?
When the volume levels rise, I run my WA at either 2.67 or 2 ohms (three or four 8 ohm cabs) and it can keep up easily with a loud drummer and 2 loud guitars. I have done this successfully with never an issue. I do, like many others, wish Mesa would/could make a WA with more output, but the 500 or so watts it puts out at 2 ohms is surprisingly potent. IME of course...
Played my third new/used WA(JJ tubes in both positions) through my glock quattro last night for a sportsbar gig..big stage with pa support and it sounded really full...
Ran the volume at only 9am with gain 12..little bump @250 and everything else flat(mids at 10 am)..plenty for stage monitoring..a little natural harmonic content from the gain= NICE
I wish my playing was as good as the amp..I was flaking out a bit...end of a long work week and one of those days where the brain can't fully make the fingers go where they are supposed to ..but I soldiered on and by the third song of our set all was well and grooving.
Need to find a bronco head or bag for that bad boy...I will be keeping this one...may make a WA scout stack eventually too

Instead of a Scout stack, consider an Audiokinesis Thunderchild cab. Best WA cab IME. Both the 12 (just over 30 lbs) and 15 (low 40lb range) are available in FOUR Ohms and both can handle the full 300 watts (unlike the Scout 12). The 15 is supposedly tuned pretty much the same as the 12, but obviously a bit louder and more sensitive. They are tuned a tad less deep than the Scouts, but will not boom the room as easily. Amazing cabs IME. I had the 12 and decided to try the 15 for its' increased volume.....should have it in a few weeks.......check the Audiokinesis thread out. Killer boxes at low weight
with long x-max drivers and meticulously crafted crossovers for about 10% more than Mesa boxes.....but with a several month wait. Chef auditioned the 12 and has apparently ordered a 12/15 stack. There....now cope with THAT GAS

If I were playing bass as much as I used to, (instead of keyboard synth), I'd be GAS'n hard for one or two of those. Incurable disease, it is.
looking into vertically arrayed setup to go with WA..want some speakers up higher/closer to ear for shows ...to make that happen I was thinking maybe a 212/112 8 ohm deal..prob is not many vertical 212 except GB neox... and less footprint is nice too for some of the smaller stages...more room to bust a move
I used my WA 12" combo last night with my Berg AE112 also, so a 4 ohm load.
Those 2 cabs go nicely together.
The WA head goes well running the AE212 & AE112 together too

Is there any way to get less harsh/gritty tube breakup when the input gain is past noon on a passive Jazz? I really like the sound of this amp and want it to stay at the top of my list but I played it again today and was hoping for something a bit rounder/fatter.
Mind you...I was playing as jazz with rounds and I play tapes/flats, but would like to know if a tube swap would work.
