Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

Nature of the beast. I tried some lower gain preamp tubes and not really that different either. It is just loud at 0.5. I run my gain about 12-1 oclock and volume has never been above 9 oclock ever. Well not on anyway. You can control your volume a bit more with your bass or you can use the gain but that does affect the tone.

I tried quite a few times to run the gain above 12 o'clock but just didn't like the tone at all. If you asked me to explain what it was I didn't like I wouldn't be able to put my finger on it.

M9 GEQ? We don't need no stinkin' graphic EQ:D I run my M6 flat with my AE410 and it is perfection for me and my Sadowskys.

Can you explain what you didn't like abo....oh, nevermind.....:=)

It seemed like it was less defined with the gain set around 1 o'clock. I am playing against a pair of old Marshall Plexis that run pretty thick tone-wise. The M6 just seemed to cut better with the cleaner sound I get with the lower gain setting. I'm sure this is going to vary with whatever the others are playing in the band.

Whoa, that's too bad.

I use my M6 2x12 combo on large outdoor stages with no sound reinforcement for bass. I don't think the master volume's been run higher than 10 o'clock. The tone is consistent at higher output. No distortion, farting out, etc.

For many players, though, this combo is overkill at typical club gigs, which likely accounts for the appearance of the M3 1x12 combo in the Mesa/Boogie catalog.

The M6 2x12 combo is a somewhat unwieldy beast to lug around. I suspect it didn't sell well for that reason. It isn't easy to lift, and it doesn't fit in ordinary coupes, sedans and hatchbacks. You need a truck, van or SUV. Fortunately, my wife's 4Runner is usually available.

Interested bassists will buy the last new M6 2x12 combos in stock, pursue used ones on Craigslist, or put together a similar rig with an M6 head + PH212 cabinet.

I do love my M6 2x12 combo!

I've had my M6 combo only about 2 weeks, it's making a pretty loud crackling noise. According to the manual, this is a symptom of preamp tube failure and it says to swap it out. Suprisingly, the manual even suggests keeping plenty of spares. Anyways, I was going to try and pop the head unit out, but it wasn't really coming out readily. I know it sounds dumb, and I could be overlooking something really stupid, but I just don't want to force it out and possibly damage things. To make a long story a bit longer, here's the main question: How do I remove the head and change the tube in my M6 carbine combo?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really dig the tone on this thing and I want to get it up and running again.

Well, got rid of my Terror Bass (which was a pretty sweet amp as well, but just not exactly what I wanted) and brought home the M6. At home I have a Hartke Hydrive 112 for practicing, and it sounds fantastic. Can't wait to take it to the rehearsal space and plug it into my Orange cabs.

Is the Mesa head case available seperately? Any of you guys rack mounted your head and want to sell the Mesa case?

Thanks, Lenny.

Thanks guys. Put a call in to Mesa this morning to see about getting one. An SKB case would be a good choice as well, much lighter I guess.

I'll wait and see how much the Mesa case is and make a decision then I guess.

I can't find any links to the head case when I search, which is why I posted here.
