Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

Just an informational post to all. Sent my M6 in for service. Its back now with the new cover, extra fan, and I'm sure whatever else was in the upgrade package. If anyone is having problems, don't hesitate to contact Mesa! They did a great job for me and were very professional.

I did not have any failures but it was getting pretty hot and smelled weird once in awhile. Now its rock solid and cool.

What's up boys... long time reader... first time poster...

I've been playing through an Acoustic 370 head which I certainly have never loved but basically inherited from a past bandmate... Had a GK 1001 RB which was stolen a ways back in the shuffle after a gig.

Thinking about checking out the M6, wondering the basic pro's and cons... I will be pairing it with my current cab which is a Mesa Powerhouse 1000...

I prefer a modern tone that can cut through the mix... I like clean mids and highs cause I tend to favor pretty melodic lines when suitable.

I live in LA so I'll be able to drop in on the Mesa store but figured I'd pick a few experienced brains for some feedback.

I'm also open to other ideas/suggestion... but I am a fan of Mesa's products and quality.

Cheers.

IMO, your tone goals pretty much hits the nail on the head in regards to what the M6 (or M9) will do for you. Loud, clean and clear is what it's all about, but don't be afraid to set the gain in the noon-1:30 range, which is where I've found the sweet spot to be.

Though I personally never played through that exact head/cab combination, I also own an M6 and would think that it would be more than capable of driving that cab nicely.

As for any cons, there are a few:

1.) Master Volume goes from off to earth shaking very quickly, especially when the gain is up higher.
2.) The pull mute, coupled with the above issue, makes it almost impossible to get back exactly to where your volume was before (I use the mute on my pedal tuner to get around this).
3.) I believe the Master Volume also affects the effects loop send level, which I know has been an issue for some people who use the loop. I personally don't use the loop, so it's not a problem for me.
3.) Like most (or all?) other Mesa amps, the Master Volume affects the DI level unless you set the DI on "Pre" (which IMO is recommended anyways).

It would also be nice if there was a sweepable mid control or even better, a Para EQ, but so far there hasn't been a room where I've used it that it didn't sound great in. The tone controls that are there interact nicely and you can really dial in a lot of different sounds - very deceiving with such a relatively simple layout.

OInge...How long was the turn around??

Almost exactly a month from when it left my door to when it returned. So about 2-3 weeks not including shipping time.

Don't hesitate. It's also worth considering the M9 for the nice compressor and increased eq capability. Crazy loud and low.

Just curious if there is any M6 users out there that are hooked up to an Ampeg 810AV?....I possibly have a great deal coming up....wanted to know before I pulled the trigger.

thanks

I'm using my M6 with an ampeg 810 heritage and a p bass. Pure bliss. Doesn't sounds as good with my 5 string that has bartolinis. Too much low end, end up having to dial the M6 way back.

Need some insight fellas.

Lately when I'm playing low notes, I'm getting a loud, ugly "pop" out of my cabs. I can get rid of it by turning down the gain, but then I'm not getting the sound I like. I'm basically using the "big and wide" setting that they show in the manual, however I can turn the master past 8 o' clock or so without it occurring.

I realize that's pretty loud, but it should be able to handle the suggested setting without any problems I would think.

I'm playing a passive p bass, and I'm running the amp at 4 ohms into an Orange 410 and an Orange 15. I've recently tuned down to C standard, but I was doing it before that. The bass is set up with proper strings to handle the lower tuning.

It seems to me that the amp is clipping. You can see the power light flicker ever so slightly when I'm playing the low notes, so I'm wondering if it's a power issue.

Anyone else experienced this?? It's killing my jam buzz.

Thanks, Lenny.

Are you using a power conditioner?
When I ran my M6 with a Furman rack power conditioner I had something similar happening.
Like the power conditioner was starving the amp of power every once in a while.
Took the Furman out and the problem was gone.

Well, it's not the tube. It seems to be the OBC 15. At least that's the cab that's making the pop sound when I drive it hard. When I take it out of the signal the 410 sounds fartty and anemic.

I'm going nuts. Either I've blown both cabs which seems pretty unlikely, or there's a problem with the amp.

Regardless, I can't turn the gain past 9 o' clock without weird stuff happening.

Hmmmm! That sux.:hmm:

Do you know another bass player that will let you plug in your WA?

Yeah, a good friend of mine rehearses down the hall. He has an SVT CL and Ampeg 410 and 15 that I can use whenever I want. Not a bad backup rig eh? :)

I think I'll drag his cabs over and run the M6 through them and then see how it sounds. Then I'll run the CL through my cabs. Process of elimination.

Good times.

It almost sounds like a tweeter has blown in one of the cabinets. Almost like a voice-coil rub. When you give it enough power it will break the voice-coil loose.:(
