As my favorite co-worker says "prove it!"

Almost always indefensable.

Hiss: my cabs with horns are pretty bright; my cabs without horns: not so much...;)

So hawt.

Hi Chronicle...Do I spy a Green EarCandy BassBomb?? :hiding: I have a BassBomb too...Peace...DAcat

Super stoked on the M6 still. I've had it in running with a 2X12 and a 1X15 PH cab in various combos of one, the other, or both. I just added a Warwick Corvette $$ with Lo-Riders and a Micro POG and an MXR Blow Torch. The rig is deadly. The Warwick is insane through this thing. It does get a bit clacky with the active preamp and the tweeters on the PH cabs turned up. Easy solution, put the bass on passive and turn the tweeters down :D

Got a gig in a few hours and can't wait to open the flood gates. I've got another gig on Saturday, but the house has a backline they force you to use. I'm gonna miss the Carbine :(

I just came across about a 1/2 dozen Telefunken 12ax7s ecc83 that were in an old dynaco tube stereo preamp.
Im going to see how these sound as compared to the original Mesa tube in the fathom.

EDIT: I was just on ebay and saw what these are going for... They have been in my garage for 20 years...and in my dads basement for years before that...
time to start rolling tubes for my gear and see if these are all that different..

Sweet find!

Ok, some new data.

Recheck yerself on this too...

If I have the EQ flat, and both gain/master all the way down, there is a little bit of hiss coming out and that is not affected by the mute. If I turn either of them up, a little more hiss comes out, and that IS affected by the mute. So whatever is introduced by adding gain, is affected by the mute, but whatever is there as a "baseline" of noise is simply always there.

Yip agreed with that Vic and did some more testing. With no input I put everything at 12:00 and put a decibel meter infront of my berg tweeter. Measured the baseline at 64 to 67 or so db. With all knobs at noon the mute does drop the hiss as Vic stated. With an active bass plugged in and the amp toggled to passive and everything at noon except the volume the hiss is about 68db. It is quieter when swithched to passive mode on the bass obviously. For grins, I measure the fan noise at around 70 db right at the housing. Also switched out the tune and tried an exact replacement Mesa AX7 and a Groove Tube 5751. I measured both with the db at my baseline all knobs at noon and there was noe measurable difference between the three. I thought the 5751 would be quieter but the db meter doesn't lie. I think I did actually notice a subtle difference in the tonal quality and actually prefer the 5751 but since it was a GT I will wait and see what Vic/Chefs outcome is. My guess is a bit better tonal quality but no less noise:hmm: So I just put the original back in for now and will return the others. I bet a less efficient cab and definetely a cab with out tweeters will be quiter.

Also for those wanting to change out tubes, you'll need to remove 20 chasis screws. I took a few picture while I had the top down and will post tomorrow. Chef I also took a oic of the side of the chasis cover with the perforations. Interesting note - the transformer is marked with Mpulse600 on it.

We set up tonight for the gig tomorrow. I did a brief sound check of my rig... the M6 (Fathom) running a pair of Epifani UL112 cabs. Oh... my... gosh... I could not believe how loud that was. Woah.

Yeah, I have been impressed with my Fathom through one of my Mesa PH112's.

Also, I haven't noticed any hissing from my setup, and I am usually pretty sensitive to that stuff. The Markbass combos with the piezo tweeters used to drive me nuts because of that. However I will double check on Sunday when I go in for practice.

Okay, residual/baseline noise is present from my M6 Carbine combo cab. I did have to kneel on the floor and get within 10 inches of the grill before it became evident due to the masking from the fan noise. As far as live gigging goes I would still consider this dead quiet, compared to some other amp/cab pairings I have owned, and find no significant difference in muted vs. unmuted and plugged in vs. nothing plugged in.

The residual baseline noise may pose a concern/problem for some in a recording situation when mic'd up, but that is not an issue for my use which is live playing.

Cheers,

Swerve away from fan noise for a minute....

Man, I LOVE this amp!
Used it last night with my 410UL, G&L JB2 loaded with Nord NJ4's, and my Big Single/Nord preamp Valenti Geddy Vee.

Input at noon, master at about 9 o'clock provided puh-lenty of juice to fill the club were were playing...my band is running Bose Sticks, my rig is FOH.

I had the deep engaged, bass backed off to about 10 o'clock. Mids flat, treble lowered from center juuust a tad....preset at "flat" or 3...

The G&L JB2 with Nords is smooth enough that it wanted a lil help getting out into the room effectively. Pushing the mids with the mid knob wasn't really getting it, so I went back to flat, and hit preset 4....snap! Done! That makes a huuuge dif.

With the Valenti, I went back to preset 3 and left everything else alone.

Coming from my SWR/Eden/TFB/Walkabout backround, I was really skeptical of the whole preset dealio.

"Uncle"

It works, beautifully.

My recently returned from service/upgrade worked well. No issues other than "I want the new top cover with the additional venting please."
Even tho I was running 4 ohms, and not pushing the rig, I'd have liked to feel her running a cooler. I don't know that I'd bet my last nickel on it at 2 ohms without the additional venting from the new top cover.

+1

You and I are sync'd up on this. Thanks for rechecking. At least we know the amps are consistent. I think that's important to know.

Well a big part of this is how bright your cabs are. I use Epi cabs mostly, and those are BRIGHT. If you typically attenuate your tweeter, or if your tweeters aren't as aggressive as the Epi's, you probably will never notice the hiss.

For example, I often roll off the treble on the M6 because it's so strong all the way from the lows to the highs. If I, instead, leave the treble alone, and use the tweeter attenuator to get the same result, the hiss goes WAY down.

Yessir: concur.
I run the horn on the 410UL at about 9 o'clock, and it's plenty bright that way, even with the treble turned down just a lil bit at the amp.

Haven't noticed any hiss out of mine. In fact, I think it is the quietest amp I have ever owned.

I hit the gig last night with the full stack of (115 and 212 PH cabs) for a relatively small venue (100-150 person capacity). I ran everything at about noon, with a bit of bass and mid added and a little trebble off, no bass boost. I played with the presets on the mids for a bit at the start and ended up with postion 2 (for the record, all the mid settings sounded good, I just liked preset 2 the best for the room last night). The Warwick Corvette $$ is plenty growly and articulate (particularly with a fresh set of Lo-Riders), so I didn't need as much mid boost as I did with my Epi Thunderbird to cut through. The bottom held together so tight that I could play some stuff in lower octaves and still have it come through clearly without turning to mud.

I give lots of credit to my new $$ for being able to sound as good as I did last night, but the M6 still deserves a bundle of credit. It was just so punchy and solid. I could get as loud as I needed to (probably louder) with out clipping or mushing out.

At the end of the night, some dude came by to talk to another member of my band and he rested his PBR bottle on the head. I didn't even ask him to move it, I just grabbed the bottle and put it on the floor. He said "sorry, force of habit." I told him that I understood, but that I needed to protect my gear. He asked me what was so special about it, and I told him "she's my baby, I need to look out for her." He's lucky I was in a good mood.

If you've got a 60 cycle ground loop, flip it the other way.
If not, don't worry about it.

IME anyway. So far, I've never used it with this amp.
