Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

I've had my M6 Carbine for a bit now, and the only noise I hear at any time is the fan, and that is acceptable for me. No hiss of any kind, muted or otherwise. Sounds equally great through my AE410 or any of my Bag End cabs (even the 2x10's with the coax). As Chef and others have stated, plenty of ooomph, great tone! :bassist:

BTW - The one thing I'm unclear of on this amp is the ground switch in the back. What position should it be in under what circumstances?
I'd like to make a slight tweak to Chef's comment.

Like he says, you should only flip it if you have the hum, BUT, you should always start in the non-lifted (grounded) position... especially if you're a singer. Trust me on this. :)

got it. i don't sing to a mic, so that makes less of an impact. good to know though so i can avoid this

Agreed. Checked mine out this morning (not that I've noticed anything wrong) and mine is perfectly quiet except for the fan as BRS stated.

Swerve away from fan noise for a minute....

Man, I LOVE this amp!
Used it last night with my 410UL, G&L JB2 loaded with Nord NJ4's, and my Big Single/Nord preamp Valenti Geddy Vee.

Input at noon, master at about 9 o'clock provided puh-lenty of juice to fill the club were were playing...my band is running Bose Sticks, my rig is FOH.

I had the deep engaged, bass backed off to about 10 o'clock. Mids flat, treble lowered from center juuust a tad....preset at "flat" or 3...

The G&L JB2 with Nords is smooth enough that it wanted a lil help getting out into the room effectively. Pushing the mids with the mid knob wasn't really getting it, so I went back to flat, and hit preset 4....snap! Done! That makes a huuuge dif.

With the Valenti, I went back to preset 3 and left everything else alone.

Coming from my SWR/Eden/TFB/Walkabout backround, I was really skeptical of the whole preset dealio.

"Uncle"

It works, beautifully.

My recently returned from service/upgrade worked well. No issues other than "I want the new top cover with the additional venting please."
Even tho I was running 4 ohms, and not pushing the rig, I'd have liked to feel her running a cooler. I don't know that I'm bet my last nickel on it at 2 ohms without the additional venting from the new top cover.

Almost one year under the belt running the M6 Carbine Combo and it still amazes me, the bandmembers, the audience and other musicians. I concur with Chef's "Man, I Love This Amp" comment. :hyper:

Last night, country/country rock gig, I too was my own foh in a 300-350 capacity venue, with about 250-275 in attendance, using the 4 ohm configuration M6 Carbine Combo.

Interesting that no matter what the bass employed is the M6 Carbine settings are extremely close for so many of us. Last night with the Fender P-Bass 5 it was Pull Deep engaged, Bass control backed off to about 10:00 - 10:30, flat Active Mid control, flat Treble, and Pre-set 3. In this particular room when switching off to the '62 RI Jazz it was Pull Deep engaged and everything flat with the pre-set either off or on 2, (the buckle polishers), or just depending on the song, fingers or pick, and mood.

The last set of three 60's was very enlightening for a guest geetard player that sat in for a couple of tunes. After tuning up his early '60's Les Paul he came over to my side of the stage, where, humerously enough (what's with these people that have that bad habit?), he too tried to set the beer bottle in hand on top of the M6 Carbine, and was intercepted before touching down with a suggestion that maybe he should stuff that bottle in his pocket. With a confused look he told me he wanted to plug into the Mesa Lead Amp. :D

I quickly explained that it was MY Bass Amp and Not a Geetard Lead Amp. "Are you serious?" was his reply, "I thought you were DI'd through the P.A.?" We got him plugged into a proper Geetard vehicle and after the two songs he asked me for a card so he could tell his bassist about the Monster Tone and Volume from this Tiny Mesa Bass Amp and have him contact me for an audition of the amp.

Rather refreshing to have a lead player more impressed with a piece of Bass Amp kit than his solo's after sitting in on two songs.

Cheers,

Mr. BEAR

True. For most of my basses, I tend to use VERY similar EQ. IMHO, that's the sure sign of an amp that's got "my sound" nailed down. In my case, the M6 definitely fits that description.

ROFLMAO!! Cool story! :D

Tried the M6 through the Berg EX112ER (no tweet) on the floor and had to get down on the floor and put my ear by the cab to hear the baseline noise. When plugged in and sitting in the chair the fan was louder than the hiss noise, so probably not a big deal in most situations or when using a cab without a tweeter. Even at an 8ohm load and a little 12" this cabs smokes.

"This just in: Mesa makes Guitar Amps Too!"

Y'all didn't know?

;)

I find it amusing that the guitarists look quizzically at Mesa bass gear, as if it were from Mars.
Really, you didn't know? They made bass amps first mate...

I checked mine again tonight and the hiss is omnipresent and totally unaffected by the mute switch (mostly through the tweeter). FWIW the 700RB-II that I am currently playing around with is dead silent plugged into the same outlet, hooked to the same cab with the same cable. However, the M-Pulse 600 I had was hissy as well, so perhaps it's a Mesa thing...?

This does not detract from the fact that this is a fantastic piece of equipment. I am still shocked at just how loud and full this thing is. Mesa nailed it with this one.

I've had my M6 for a few weeks, have done 10 or so gigs with it. I can't get a good sound out of it. No matter what I do, it's just too 'in your face', especially with a P bass. That upper midrange hump is ruining it for me, with no way to EQ it out. Love the headroom, and killer tight/deep low end, size/weight are great, but the tone just isn't cutting it. Band members from several different bands have yet to have a positive thing to say about it. What the heck? Anybody get any result from tubes swaps that I may try? I'm bummed after reading all the glowing reviews, and having exactly the opposite experience as everybody else. I'm actually pretty close to selling it, unfortunately. :(

Hey, it'd be a pretty darn dull world if we were all the same. :)

I think you're right. If you compare the signal-to-noise specs in Bass Gear issue #1, the M6 is noisier than both the Markbass and Genz Benz amps that were tested.

Mine certainly isn't silent when muted or with gain and master off, but it's not much of a problem either.
