Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

Monster. I'm still not completely used to my M6 yet but you nailed it with the ear adjustment thing. The amp is so clean and so powerful that slight adjustments to the eq stand out instantly. It's a way cool amp but wasn't intuative to me at first to get a sound I was at least used to, so I guess that's why I dig the flat the most and just crank it to what I need. The less gain more master is something to play with too.

This is why I dont like knobs with preset EQ curves - to much interaction between that and the normal EQ controls. Yes, they can sound good and can help, but I'd prefer a more powerful/tweakable EQ without the shape controls. That's just me, and I know that it sure works for plenty of applications, the Carbine is obviously a good indicator of that.
I generally concur on the presets vs eq, but not because of the interaction with the other controls. If you're using them like another eq control, that's your problem. IMHO, they should be treated as a baseline, and then left alone while you tweak the EQ from there. In other words, set the preset with all the other settings at noon, then adjust those (and only those).

If you're tweaking eq and THEN flipping presets, yeah, I can see that not working too well, but IMHO that's backwards anyway.

In short tho, yeah, I'd rather have more controls than somebody else's view on what a curve should be hard coded into a preset, BUT, I've personally found I very rarely need to use them on the M6 anyway, so it's kinda' moot for me.

"starting over again" when you switch presets isn't an overly complicated deal: there's only three other eq knobs;)
I typically have only moved one or two of those.

Once you're famliliar with it, it shouldn't take but about 5 seconds to change those three things...which I only do when changing basses anyways.

YMMV; etc.

---it ain't as weird as working with something that uses the "fender tone stack"

+1

Also, IMHO, this is something done once, per venue, and even then only if needed, and then just use the EQ for the rest of the night... IF need be. Never during a gig.

I really don't view the presets as "EQ controls" at all. I'd never envision changing presets between songs or sets.

I'm really a set/forget kinda' guy. I RARELY touch my amp at a gig once I've dialed in a base tone.

I focus a lot on doing everything I need to do with my right hand, blend controls, and any preamp in the instrument. My main thing with an amp is it's just gotta' be punchy, powerful, faithful to my sound, and clean. I rarely use effects, as well. I'm easy to please, really. :)

I'll more or less buy that.
I kinda use the presets to "match the head to the bass/cab I'm using at the moment."
Then, tweak the eq a tad if I need to.

Cause I have a bunch of basses, I like to take two, or sometimes three, to any given job. I typically don't switch b/t songs, but at a set break. Then I'll set everything back to flat, check 'er out, tweak 'er in, and let 'er rip;)

Me too.

Last night I played around with the EQ a bit more. I'm not sure where the frequencies are that the EQ tweaks, but it was interesting rolling off the highs on the amp vs. rolling them off on the bass pre-amp. I found I needed to work with both the bass and the amp to get things where I wanted it. In the end, I found a great sub-sonic voicing that didn't sound like it was that loud with my ears, but the shaking furniture and walls seemed to indicate that something powerful was creeping out of my speakers, and I was just running the 212 without the 115. No need to cut through the mix when you can just feel the floor moving and your heart beat being altered.

I have a love hate relationship with the bass knob on the M6. The dynamic interaction it has with the high frequencies doesn't lend itself to a quick bass adjustment in certain cases as the trebble often needs to be adjusted in conjunction with the bass EQ knob.

Here is an under the hood look at the M6. Does anyone know if that baseline noise that we have been discussing is present through the DI. Just wondering what to expect.

where's the tube? :o

I tried out my M6 through a Ampeg 8x10 and Markbass 4x10 at high volumes yesterday. Didn't like the sound of a P-bass through it but a Warwick and Jazz bass sounded great :D

Side vents on the cover. Wonder if it will work with the gator rack bag now.
Personally, I hate rack bags. I'd go 2spc or 3spc SKB or Gator shallow.

BTW, be careful putting those cover screws back in. Don't overtighten. One thing I do wish they'd have done is use some inserts or a thicker metal to thread into. The metal is thin enough those screws can strip out a little easier than I'd like.

Try turning your cabinets' tweeters down. I've found that it improves both the idle noise and the midrange "honk." My P sounds better that way.

Good luck,
Greg

Saluki I just put my M6 in a GigSkinz 2 space rack bag (similar to a Gator bag). I haven't had a problem yet but I can tell you the head runs pretty hot. I have a lot of heat coming from the front vents.

The amp runs whisper quiet and SVTB15 there is no noise from the DI out on my M6.

oh the amp is quiet.. but the DI in my eval unit has an ocean noise though.. I got an RA number to send it in.. i have just not gotten around to it yet...

we tried to change out the tube... checked for loose connections.... everything looks ok mechanically...
