Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

Well I used the M6 today at church in the kids service with a berg ex112er and a Nordy VJ5. Sounded great and the baseline noise was not a problem with the ex112ER at all (no tweet). Didn't try out the DI but that is coming soon and will report back.

It is in a gator 3-space shallow with tuner and soon to be gone compressor. If you are going to use a compressor with this amp don't put it in the fx loop. Just doesn't work:hmm:, but you can use something in front of the amp. The switch is worth it from me because it is a great amp.

A note on the under the hood pic I posted. It must have been taken between tube swaps because the picture show it without the tube. Probably will be replacing the stock with a 5751 in the near future anyway.

Cool..I bet the DI will be incredible... This one is just a one off problem i think.. its going back on Tuesday on the RA.
I did record this fathom through the Effects send out and the presets are very usable and with no extra noise...
It is a fast responding amp and that is one thing that i like about it... And i never essential use EQ.. but setting @2 was very appropriate...

I used setting 3 with everything flat. The bass boosted a bit on the VJ5 but setting 2 sounds real nice with the VJ5 which has some natural mid presence, especially playing over bridge pickup in 70's position.

Boo ya - pocketknife worked like a charm. Thanks Chef!

I really like those 2-space SKB cases. I've got one for my m-pulse 600... makes transport so much easier.

+1 The standard SKB 2 space rack is just perfect for 2 rack space bass heads. I've used them for years and years now. Plenty of cooling space on the sides, and the latches are part of the lids, not the case itself, so no rattles, etc.

I currently have my Fathom in one. After popping off the rubber nub feet it slipped in perfectly and works great.

I bought a Fathom on clearance for $950 cdn. (That's $743 usd) Sorry.

Just a few thoughts.

The exhaust fan is loud, but you can't hear it when you're playing. This amp has stunning headroom. What I've found is that it needs very careful tweaking. If you have an active bass, TURN DOWN YOUR VOLUME KNOB. The padding seems to be very slight. Take your time and set up everything the way you need before you go live. The manual has a series of presets that pretty much do what they say they will.

One note - with a boogie diesel stack (210 and 115.. Yeah it's heavy, but it sounds great!) The sound seems to deepen as it gets louder. Bottom line, experimentation at volume is required.

This amp has the capability to reproduce pretty much any tone you desire at incredible volume. I am in the process of building a switch box for the various functions, as there is none available.

In summary, not everyone's cup of chowder, but a great yeoman's amp that is sturdily built and dynamic.

I did not intend to start anything. Maybe louder is a better choice compared to, say, other SS amps.

Loud is a subjective thing, and please note I stated that you cannot hear it when you are playing.

All in all, a great amp that I will not part with under any circumstance.

I don't have the mesa head case for the M6; but I do for one of my Walkabouts.
Yes, it's big; tho with the WA, not *thaaaat* big. With the M6, it would be bigger compared to the skb 2 space it's currently in.

The reason I went with the mesa case for the WA was that it ran hot (never shut down or had issues) at 2 ohms. Figgered the Mesa case might offer the best performance, in terms of venting. It did in fact work out that way, in this case. I went the same route with the MPulse 600, with the same result: much cooler.

The Mesa case has loooots of sideroom, and a big vent on top.

---in this case...ha! get it! ha!---
