Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

Vic,

Your telling a control freak that I must let go of control:eek:. Almost had a pnaic attack there. I bet that new skjold will sound great through the board.:bassist: Ok, OT but do I really need an M6 then? I could just run DI and have them send my bass back in a monitor.
Well, then you serve FOH, but not YOU, and that's just as bad, because then your playing suffers.

Remember, in a situation with a full PA, your stage rig is ONLY for YOU as a "stage monitor" so you have tone you're happy with to help inspire you to play... at least it should be, IMHO. Stage is stage and main is main, and never the twain shall meet! :D

Also, to avoid any potential confusion, a recording situation is a totally different scenario... in that case I could definitely see using POST, and maybe also using a mic as well, and sometimes both with a direct signal to mix as needed.

I see it just a little differently... It's for me and the rest of the band.
So I punch up a nice juicy sound that we can all enjoy. Important IMO/IME.
Nope, we don't see that differently... you're absolutely correct. My post was simply short-sighted, because I totally agree in a band not only must we be inspired to play well, but if we're doing what we should be doing, we should also inspire the rest of the band as well.

Plot thickens part two:

Called Mesa today and talked to one of the tech reps (Chris). I asked about the whole DI thing and it really comes down to what I suspected:economics. To put a dedicated DI control (like the BB750) level in requires more circuitry and thus more money. I am coming around to Ken and Vic and others thinking on the DI, and although I would never run a super scooped sound it sound as if you were going to run that or any other radical EQ you would have to do with a DI box. If you did run it post on the M6 you run the risk of changing the FOH level if you adjusted your stage volume unless there was a linear relationship between the DI level control and master and you could increase/decrease the same amount.

The second thing I asked about was the whole FX loop thing. He said that the FX loop send level is not controlled by the master volume. I asked this several different ways for clarification including "so the FX is loop is located before the master" answer yes and "so the master should in no way affect the signal level to the FX loop" answer correct. Unless he is not in the know or something is really botched from concept to design then this must be true, eh?

Interesting. Having the effects loop post master was a very strange concept. I hope this is correct, and that the original poster on this issue was mistaken.

that's what i ask for when i track.
not always what i get, but what i ask for;)

Sorry folks, Mesa is mistaken. Just as an idiot check, I just now plugged the Send from the M6 into the input of my guitar amp. The Master on the M6 made the guitar amp get louder and softer.
Dude, can you call them and see what they say about this, since you have one in-hand, and Saluki didn't (and thus couldn't "call them" on that statement)? I'll check mine out tonight as well just as another data point, but I'll assume for now they're all like this and the Mesa person was simply mistaken... maybe unaware of a late design change just prior to release or something that maybe this is/was a side-effect of.

It really does seem odd. Again, absolutely no concern to me, but I'll at least contribute data to the topic. I'm fairly sure mine has all the updates applied, so if mine does NOT work this way then maybe there's a service bulletin on this and a quick mod back at Mesa will be all that's necessary.

Anyway, I'll let you know.

Vic and some others please let us know. I told the Mesa rep that exact problem that one TBer was having and he was basically implying that it shouldn't happen that way. To me this has to be an oversight. I can actually see the whole DI thing from a economics standpoint, but really why even include a FX loop if the master is going to control the output. Sounds more like the slave output then an FX loop to me. Maybe it would be and easy fix, but it seems that having the DI switch position for "pre" in the in as compared to out would be a simple mod as well.

I'm no EE, but I'd presume it would be easy enough to swap wires on the "pull for pre" knob to reverse it's function.

I got no answer to the other DI issue; but the Walkabout functions the same way, I think. I've never noticed as I set all my volumes the same, and leave them that way thoughout the gig.

I'm seriously considering doing this unless it's a PCB thing and not possible.

Yes, the master affects the DI, BUT, I don't know about the effects loop, which is the topic I'm currently contributing to.

OK, spoke to a certain Mike at Mesa. He was surprised and consulted the manual, which of course shed no light. Said he'd speak to some other folks around the office and call me back if he has any 'good' news.

Regarding the Pre/Post DI push-pull: I can see through the slots in the front that this can easily be reversed as the switch is wired flying lead style. Yay.

dmusic148,

Can you do the same test with the volume on the FX send but this time plug a open ended cable in the return? I talked with my local mesa dealer about this, who is also a authorized MB repair center and he is going to look at a get back with me. He said something about it being a series and the other amp drawing impedence or something above my head.. For a minute I thought I was talking with KJ, as his first comment was "why would insert a compressor in an effects loop?". I told him I did it on the BB750 w/o incident.

Wait a minute now. That cannot be a correct answer from Mesa. Chris told me that the Titan works differently and I know the Mpulse has a variable signal and the manual states to keep teh "wet" signal around 10%. So the don't all work the same. Maybe I am wrong on the BB750 but I am sure they are not all the same. Wierd man, that guy tells me absolutely the master doesn't affect the signal to the FX. Makes no sense. Wish we could get a straight answer that would satisfy me:mad:.

I'm waiting for the next Mesa tech guy to say 'tubes, what tubes?':D
