Mesa M9 mega thread

So here I am (last night) with my brand-new out-of-the-box M9. Twist-locked to 2 PH cabs; power-up with Gain & Master down all the way. Amp warms-up for 2 minutes, raise the gain to 12 o'clock and the master to 10 o'clock. I slapped the E-string twice and the amp cuts out. Waited a few minutes but nothing changed. Tried different cabs but that didn't help either. It seems that the input stage of the M9 has some sort of problem. Goning to head back to the store today. Very disappointing. Thought Mesa's Q.C. was better than that - these are supposed to be road-worthy.

Contact Mesa tech support, give them the store name and location, and serial number. They really need to make sure they track this one and figure out what the heck happened here. You're correct, this should never happen with them.

The Early Fathom/M6 had some issues.

Some M9's have had issues, but these have all had very low serial numbers, from what I've seen.
I've not had a lick of trouble out of mine.

Mesa is really good at CS, so if you like the amp, get with them, they will make it right.

I hear ya, love my M9 and have had limited but top shelf experience with Mesa CS for a Scout cab issue a while back. Never had a hiccup, but I must admit I seem to read a lot of this compared to some other makes (GB, GK etc) and the last such post said "new out of the box" so I doubt it's a very early one (but perhaps it is). Maybe it's the inherent bias of always reading the Mesa threads and passing over most of the others?

It seems that the local music store where I purchased the M9 from is an authorized service center, so there's no reason for me to contact Mesa CS. The local dealer will get in touch with them when the issue's resolved.

Right now it's on the Tech's bench being worked on. The tech's first thought is that there's something loose in the power section. In the store, the M9 performed well (very well I must add), but the Tech was certain that he "heard" something that (to him) points to the power section. I hope that it's just a 1 time thing.

My suggestion was more just to do Mesa a favor. You're right that it's not your responsibility. If it's not a simple go/no-go thing the dealer can fix, they just need to swap you out. Just that sometimes, good information doesn't necessarily trickle back to the maker, and that limits their ability to squash bugs most effectively.

Your call of course, but if it were me, I'd do it just to help Mesa forward such a great product.

Vic, you're right. Better that they get a heads-up directly from the user. I called and left a voice message for their CS representative whom I'm sure will call me back.

The dealer would have been happy to swap the unit for another, but it's a popular model and that was the last one in stock.

Vic's exactly right. For Mesa to track bugs and get them resolved, it's important for them to know all this.
There may be updates they'd like to apply to this unit that are outside the fix, as well.

My M9 has a serial number of 000096 so i am assuming it is a very early one. Funny as I bought it new in January 2010 but it could have sat in the store for most of the previous year. It has not given me any trouble but I did find it got very hot last weekend being used at moderate volume at 4 ohms and mounted in a 3 space Gator rack with nothing in the third rack space. Lots of room to ventilate but the amp was smoking hot.

After reading about the upgrades, i contacted Mesa CS and they confirmed that there is an refit package for these amps and although mine has never actually failed, they would be glad to make the upgrades under the warranty.

I returned the amp to my dealer yesterday and they are going to send the amp back to California unless the store is able to get authorization from the Canadian rep to exchange the amp for a new one for me. That would be fantastic and more along the lines of Genz Benz's caliber of service. I really hope I don't have to wait for weeks and weeks and be without my amp but am at the mercy of Mesa at this point. It would crazy to not have the upgrades done to avoid any overheating damage in the future.

Mine is 000092 and blew up a month ago - you did the wise thing :)
