Mesa M9 mega thread

I just picked up my M9 over the weekend and I couldn't be happier with it. I haven't had a ton of time to experiment with it and no chance to put it through any live applications but from what tinkering I have done it seems super versatile...although I'm coming from an SVT-VR which, at least to me, is about as un-versatile as it gets (not that I don't love it still, but only for certain things, i.e. bad-a$$ rock'n'roll).

I just sold my m9 a week ago after coming back from Cali for a 2nd round of repairs. I had 2 failures at shows in less then a year new. I loved the tones from it but IMHO I think there are some design issues. I have moved on to the MB fusion and can get really close to the tone i went for with the M9. Hope you guys don't have the issues with them that I did.

Can you tell me more about how you used yours?
2/4/8 ohms?
Cranked all up, or gains at noon and nine?
Touring pro? Local shows?
5 nights a week or a show every other weekend...etc...

I honestly baby all my gear. I had it in a 4 space road rack, always handled my own gear (never in a trailer). I was using it with a 4ohm PH412 for shows and 4ohm avatar 4x10 at rehearsals. I usually kept the the gain between 10 and 12 depending on the stuff I was playing. I never got the the master past 11. Between rehearsals and shows it was getting a used a good 3 to 4 nights a week. Keep in mind too the 1st time it went out it was at mesa was for 2 months and the 2nd time it was there about a month. 9 months of use and 2 failures is unacceptable IMHO. Btw it had all the updates when I purchased it new.

I really thought this one was going to be the end all for me as amps went. Tone wise it was, just had some other issues.

I don't want to sound like I'm dogging on Mesa, but I don't see myself giving them any business soon.

Bummer, but I hear you. I am a card carrying Mesa fanboy and own Walkabout and Carbine heads as well as Scout cabs, but I readily acknowledge the that high number of Carbine failures I've seen posted on TB is discouraging. IME Mesa service is pretty good, but not stellar compared to GB (the best IMHO) and I'm not sure how closely they listen to their customer base. This business of only responding by phone (no email) to customers may seem to add a personal touch, but IMHO it's a Luddite's approach that causes unnecessary delays. Hope you find what you're looking for with your GK.
My Carbine -15/6 remains my preferred setup for playing out.

I hear ya thanks. GK been great for me so far, I miss the M9, but like I said the GK gets really close to what I going for with the mesa.

Recieved my new to me M9 last night.I slammed on it for a couple hours last night and a bit this morning.So far so good-

First thoughts-Im glad I took a chance as I kind of bought this on blind faith.I didnt totally dig it in the store but thought it may be the store basses and cabs that I didnt like.I was right-this sounds totally different with my basses and cabs,as expected.I was able to dial in a few different tones that I like,and I havent even messed with the graphic EQ yet.I will also repeat what others have said-Man this thing is LOUD!So with just a couple hours with it so far it looks like it may be a keeper for meWe will see.I have 3 gigs this week and cant wait to get it in a live band setting.

Im keeping my fingers crossed that I dont have the issues Ive read about.

Guess its time to join the Mesa Club!

I've had great results from the DI's on the M6 and M9; and Walkabout as well.

The 400+ tended to be really hot (despite the gain control) and sometimes noisy.

I usually use my REDDI for DI, but the few times I've used the M9s DI it rocked with no qualms from the FOH. I say go for it rockstar. If you're really hesitant, lemme know and we can try to work something out so I can loan you mine for a month or so. My main band is taking a break to record and I have another rig to run for other gigs anyway.

Yeah what I've been doing recently is just going Speaker Out into my Radial JDI and then to the house, but IMO that tone isn't worth lugging around a big tube setup so I'm looking for somethin' else/easier.
I mean it sounds absolutely killer and ridiculously loud, but we never have our own sound guy or setup so it's really not worth it right now.
And also, Mesa DI's have always treated me right from the M-Pulse 600 to the Titan and BB750, etc., so I'm pretty positive the M9 will be right up there. :cool:

I appreciate the offer honestly, but I may never send it back if I like it!! :p :D
And I'm a lifelong Messuh fanboi so pretty much anything they do I fall in love with until I get something else they put out, so I think I'll like this one enough to just nab one off the Classifieds or something and make it work.

I always send the preamp out the DI, but, you don't have to on the M9, you can send just the bass out.
Then you miss all the Big Mesa Phat Tone though.

Oh I for sure always go Post when I DI from an amp. I agree- you just lose all the goody-ness when bypassing! I'm also about to start using my IEMs again, and last time I did that consistently I was running my M-P600 and yeah- bootay for days! ;)

:mad: lol. Just make sure you don't expect a tone that you get out of any other Mesa gear. The carbine doesn't really sound like the 400+ or the M-Pulse stuff at all IMHO. It's got it's own killer ballsy-ness-icity-itude to it lol.

On another note, I have come to find the flat tone of the M9 is a little "much" in a thinner mix. If you're not playing with a lot going on in your mix, the carbine tends to sound a little like a meshuggah fan at a Richard Bona concert lol. Has anyone else noticed this?

I never run mine flat.

Mostly, I run voice 2, with bass trimmed a tad, mids boosted a tad, and treble trimmed a tad. Then, on the GEQ, I trim the two lowest sliders a bit.

Sometimes, I use voice 3 (the "flat" setting), on shape the GEQ in more or less the traditional smileyface, adding low end, trimming some mids, and adding some highs.
