Mesa M9 mega thread

I only notice hiss if I'm sitting next to my rig.I don't hear any once I get playing distance away (more than 5 or 6 feet in my case), but I should mention my cabs do not have horns/tweeters.
When I'm "miked up" the hiss does not come through.

I wonder if some some companies utilize a filter to cut the highs in their amps so no one will notice?

Just to make it clear, I am not trying to dig up any old issue with the M9. I think it is a great amp. I don't have any spare tube to check for noise floor as suggested; and I am too lazy to open up other heads to swap tubes, hehe.

"saturation" setting for the M9
Max gain, treble 9:00
Comp threshold 12:00, ratio 3:00
Voice 3, adjust GEQ to taste/venue

Trying to decide whether to up the ante and go with the M9 for the Graphic EQ flexibility or stick with my GAS to get an M6 Carbine.

Anyone else struggle with deciding between and M6 or M9? I am actually favoring the M6 since I don't need more power, and it's light and cheaper. Just thought I'd ask for some TB wisdom in this regard. Thanks! Gary

Same question in three threads....

I had the M6 first, and at points had trouble fighting it's native big bottom end in some room/cab combinations, and so moved to the M9 specifically because the graphic and compressor helped control that.

I also had an M6 before my M9. I rarely if ever use the compressor or graphic EQ but I love having the extra power and head room the M9 gives me. As far as the weight difference...don't let that be your deciding factor because I don't believe there's that much of a difference. Go the M9....you won't be sorry.

Got one of these bad boys yesterday, with a 3 space rack to hold it in. Whoa... what an amp. Even through my lowly 2x10 Traynor it sounds incredible. I had tried a BB750 through that same cabinet (and also a 4 ohm ampeg svt) and for me, there is no comparison in volume or tone. The M9 is awesome.

Thanks for the feedback. Just looking for a deal on one or the other. As you said, it's a Good/better scenario ..and either is going to give me the slam and punch even at lower volumes that I'm sure I'll be happy.

I think either would serve you well, but I just love the simplicity of the M6. It has boat loads of headroom and power, and (at least) my M6 has no hiss issues at all.

Question-
do you guys think it would be possible to mod the M9 to make the FX Loop footswitchable? I know mine has the 2-button F/SW with EQ and Mute, but yeah- just curious here. I know other Mesa models have this feature and really wish this did too. Was thinking about throwing a guitar pre unit (possibly) in there and didn't want to bypass the M9's preamp or anything, just to have it as a more simple FX setup.
Anyway, yeah. Still rocking this thing with my pair of PH212s. Everyone loves it.

Even if I knew how to do this, I'd never advocate modifying an amp. IMHO tho. Instead, I'd just get an effects loop box and do it all within the effects chain.

Yeah that would just cause more running of cables 'n switches 'n stuff... was hoping to be able to downsize to just my XDS-Plus wireless, tuner, and a MIDI but oh well. :hmm:

I hear ya, but just sayin', if you're already carrying one or more pedals, I'd MUCH rather just add another pedal than modify an amp.

Just a quick question,
I've got a 4Ohm powerhouse 1000 cabinet and an m9 carbine.

when its at 8/4 does it matter which output on the back I use.

...meaning is the 8ohm the one on the left and the 4ohm on the right, or does it matter?

I'm printing out the manual for the M9 right now...

Gonna start reading up on it while I save enough dough for the purchase. If I come across a used M6 for a bargain, I'm on it though. But you all have convinced me I want the M9, and I'll pay full price for one new if I have too.

I tried the M6 at the only Mesa dealer for over 100 miles around about a year ago, and thought I was having rough ear sex with my bass, and liked it! :hyper:

Seriously, closest I ever got to the 'tone in my head' with any other amp I've tried. Seems made for my Thumb. Punchy, articulate and LOUD.

The same place has an M9 in stock, so this weekend I'm taking my Thumb down for a test drive with that bad girl. Can't wait to try it through the mesa 410 cab they have there. :)
