IIRC, the standard position is a shelving type control that lets less of ~50hz thru.
pulling deep shifts that shelf freq lower, letting deeper lows pass thru and adds some highs in as well.
the manual has a decent explanation of this.
manuals are viewable via the mesa website.

Chef, I see you have tried the M9 with your up-right.

Have you decided if it is a suitable match?
What do you current use as you DB rig?
Setting if you don't mind sharing.

I am undecided between the M9, WT800, and the B1500 for EUB, but leaning towards the M9.

I like my Walkabout better than the M9, for doublebass.

The Carvin B1500 sucked, bigtime, by me, for DB: bad voicing, nowhere near enough eq flex.

I used the wt800b for db for a long time; and that works well enough.

There are about ten thousand things that factor into getting your DB tone where you want it; so, my results might not work for you, your bass, your pickup, your preamp, your cab, and your goals.

I *highly* recommend auditioning before you buy when planning for gear to use with your DB.

i took the M9 on my last double bass job, along with the walkabout.

I really like the rich, 3D tone the walkabout has, but it only has so much headroom before you push the tubes sometimes.

The M9's #2 voice works pretty well. I trimmed some low end out on the graphic at 30 and 50hz, trimmed some mids at 500 and 900hz, and pushed a little more sheen in at 2 and 5khz. These were all very small adjustments, except for the 30hz. The M9 is faster, clearer, and obviously has a lot more headroom...

For me, the ideal thing would be a 600 watt walkabout, double the headroom before pushing the preamp tubes too hard. Sadly, the MPulse 600 is not that.

Our up-right tone may be some what different, or I have no clue how to work the Walkabout. I can't seem to get it to work on the Walkabout. I am using a Carvin LS1503 mostly.

My setup on the M9 is very similar to yours, I also like to use the deep-pull. And sometimes just voice #3.

My Walkabout setup:
input gain ~ noon
shelving bass: flat
"passive" mids: 10 oclock
para bass: trimmed at ~50hz to about 10 oclock
para mids: trimmed at ~500hz to about 10 oclock
para treble: boosted at ~3khz to about 2 oclock
shelving treble: cut to ~ 11 oclock

input gain set to where ever is required; generally about 10-11 oclock

this is using one LDS 2x8 cab.
sometimes I use both 2x8's!!!

Oddly enough, I really don't change those settings much when I switch to electric.
I'm using a K&K bassmax pickup and their two band preamp as well, which I generally leave flat (all controls at noon); and thomastik dominant strings.

The M3/6/9 have Big Booty!

So, when needed, I trim some with 50/80 via the graphic, and then add a little 120 back.

I most typically use an Epi UL410, but I have other stuff I use intermittently.

I've never needed all the headroom of the M6, and I don't need a compressor, so, this M9 purchase really was just for the GEQ.

I'm in too, finally! SeismicAssault sold me his mint M9 for a great price. I have rehearsed once with it, and have two gigs today.

I agree the GEQ is great, even though I never thought I'd need it. Since this baby has such clear bottom, I find I am doing what you are doing, Voice2, roll-off bottom band, bump up low mids.

Haven't decided about the compressor. I love my Multi-comp, but with the GB shuttle, I often forgot to turn it on.

Still learning the tricks the M9 can do. So far I have only used it for Rock with a Passive Jazz, but today will do Rock on '71 P-bass (at 1 pm) and Latin gig with 55-01D (all night). Cab on both gigs will be an Epifani UL1 410. Full report later. :bassist: :bassist:

Terrific time last night at my Latin gig using my active Lakland Skyline 55-01D though the new (to me) M9 driving a UL1 410.

Settings were Voice 2 with GEQ off, Gain at 1 o'clock, Bass 1 o'clock, Mids 12 noon, Treble 9 am, compressor off most of the time. I rode the gain on the bass a bit and tweeked mids and highs at times, but stayed close to the detents. The strings are DR Low Riders (extra long).

1 pm Rock gig was more of a challenge. I used a passive '71 P-bass with XL chromes. With the same cabinet, I did the Voice 2 "roll of lowest band bump low mids thang." Also cut 5k and above a lot and added a bit of compression. I tend to hit pretty hard finger-style when on such old familiar turf as that bass and this got a "tending to be choked" tone at times...passive P-bass is definately still not worked out for me with the M9--but hey, it was a great start.

The Latin band players and vocalist all remarked in effect that the sound was thick, clear, and GORGEOUS.

ps. der...it has dawned on me that since I haven't used flats on a P-bass much for about 40 years (except on fretless), that just maybe with the extra light chromes I've gotta ease back in the "whacking the strings" department, as this won't work well (tending to be choked), no matter what settings are on the pre-amp, LOL!

I've used the three space version of that for many years now.
It's had Thunderfunk, WT800b, QSC2402+various preamps, and currently holds my M6 and Korg DTR.

My M9 is in an uber small, uber light skb 2 space.
It's really all I use anymore.

I really am diggin' the M9, and have been restringing everything because I have just gone plain old tone nuts with this thing. I have decided I don't really need the compressor.

I never thought I would like the 9-band. Wrong-ola!

Chef, do you take your M9 out of the rack when you set up for the gig?

One time I use it in the rack for the first set, and it became quite warm so I took it back out before the second set. That was with a 2.6 ohm load thou (with the switch at 2 ohm). But I have since use it without the rack during gig.
