Mesa Madness - does it have to be this way?

Perhaps it's time to have the USA wired for proper voltage, think of the saving in copper cable these days.
Look what happened! you had a problem with stamp duty and the price of tea and the next thing you know, you all have half arsed electricity
at the wrong frequency.
It's all your silly fault! Now if you had remained loyal members of the jolly old British Empire you wouldn't have had a problem would you.
What's up with Japan as well, they decided on only 100 volts, no doubt just to be bloody awkward as usual.:hiding:

And they drive on the wrong side of the road. No wonder there are so many accidents.

:ninja:

Nah, we drive on the right side of the road! :D
Well how would you know know what side of the road you ought to be on if you can't be more accurate about which side of Australia Perth is on, or how to spell search.

Now of course Fox News have got geography and spelling sorted a bit better but the Coral Sea isn't actually there,:

that would be a good deal north of that.
:bawl:
PS Little wonder they can't keep up with or provide for the sort of voltages all right thinking people use.

Nope, we'd all be worshiping at the altar of Lucas, Prince Of Darkness, and there'd be no reality TV to watch. ;)

Very well said sir.

I can understand the frustration of not being able to readily convert Mesa gear to work overseas, the inflated prices and limited availability of gear would drive me nuts too. But it does go both ways to some extent. For example, here in Canada, we pay grossly inflated prices for Markbass gear as a our trade agreements with Italy are not the same as Italy's agreements with the USA. Finding approved service that can repair their gear without costing insane amounts is not easy either.

I know you were being funny, but I often feel this way.

Do you guys really expect me to believe that you can hear the sound of an "iron tranny" in a bass amp?

well, not exactly hear the iron tranny per se, but compared to the response and playing feel of a class D power section, particularly at the upper end of the power reserves of an amp, I think many can tell/feel the difference (and I would include myself in that group). I've have significant playing time on a few class D powered amps (TC RH450 and Ampeg PF500 for example) and I can definitely feel/hear the difference between those and the iron tranny equipped Walkabout, as well as my Fender Studio Bass amp (which has a serious old school big iron OT).

OTOH, I don't expect anything from you in terms of what you believe. I already know we do not have the same outlook on Mesa gear.

Ever plug a micro's preamp into the preamp in of an SVT or B-15? Or hook up a DI to the speaker out of a tube amp? Believe it. The preamp provides tone. The power tubes provide power. The output tranny provides impedance matching for the cab. But the secret sauce of a tube amp is the output tranny. It's the whole reason the REDDI with only one pre tube sounds like a tube amp being speaker DI'd...a big 4 or 5 lb hunk of iron and wire. I've run the DI in my SVT and V4B before, which are pre only, and they do sound really great and very close to the REDDI or a tube amp speaker DI, but without the OT, it sounds like something's missing out of the equation.

As I understand pfschim wasn't talking about the output tranny (which WA has none of). My assumption was that he suggested that somehow a transformer-based power supply as opposed to a switching one would impact the the tone.

I agree that the output Tr in a tube circuit can impact the tone.
