Mesa Subway Bass DI-Preamp

When i came back i turned it on and started playing. It seemed to be lacking the volume i was getting out of it previous to our break. So i go to turn it up and noticed my master was at 0 and my input was at zero, yet sound was still coming out at an ok volume. So befuddled, i turned up my input back to normal levels but the adjustment had no effect. In fact none of my knobs work anymore. The only thing that works is the active/passive switch. Luckily mesa boogie is only 10 mins away so i will go see them tomorrow and see what's up

Did you check you didn't accidentally move the output from post to pre?

Although it would never be heard in the band mix of things, my Subway DI seems to have developed a consistently intermittent "static" noise. It's almost like the sound heard when playing a well worn, or dusty record ( I just dated myself there). Has any one else had this issue? I really like the Subway, its a great addition. I've only noticed this, (actually informed by an FOH sound man) recently after enjoying it for several gigs now. Perhaps it was there all along...Once I have heard it, I can't un-hear it now. Everything functions as it should otherwise, sounds great except for the static.

Thanks for the reply. That was my first inclination as well. A new battery, or an AC adapter doesn't make a difference. Funny thing...I never noticed it before. It was only after I had, what I thought was a new battery die in a matter of minutes on me, mid song of course. I finished that gig using my back up amp, and replaced the Subway battery at home. I've had the noise issue every since. ??

Are you actually hearing it, or did the sound guy say he saw it on a meter? There are a few digital consoles the falsely indicate out of band noise on their meters (specifically the M7CL and LS9) because of the way the detector software is implemented and how levels are detected, it's a known quirk with little practical issue. There may have been a later software update for the console that addresses this, but since both consoles are out of production I don't know for sure and I no longer have an M7 in the shop.

I was hoping to get your imput :). Yes, I can actually hear it myself. When running to my own portable PA here at home, it's definitely there. With either balanced output, the static is present. Running the unbalanced 1/4 inch out (bypassing my rig pre-amp) into my regular rig, it seems to be clear. If it is present, it is at a much lower level.

On your PA at home, if using the preamp out, your PA's input needs to be set to line level or excessive noise can result due to the 30dB of additional gain. This is the most common cause of noise.

Are you running from a battery or with a power supply. If a power supply, which one? Some have proven to be very noisy, we use the 1 Spot here as our benchmark supply and it's representative of the quiet models out there.

Thank you Sir. I really appreciate getting the scoop, straight "from the ...:smug:;)" In all seriousness, I am grateful for the direction. Perhaps I have a combination of issues, or no issue at all. I will check it out better with my PA at home. I could very well be creating my own problem there. As for the sound guy, it could have been something incompatible with their FOH board. I only used a battery for source power there. However, at home my power supply was not a 1 Spot, that could be the culprit as well. Thank you much, I will look into it a bit deeper and report back later.

Based on my experience with the 800+: ( If some grown man ever walks up to you and kisses you right on the mouth, that's probably me)
The DI would be huge if it had the 800+ HP filter. Whoever designed that circuit just nailed it and if any place in the industry needs a HP filter, it's the bass signal headed toward the FOH and subs.
That feature might make you unique in that market space and I know it would sell one or two of them to me and I have a BOX full of DI's

I got my Subway DI this week. This is my first Mesa product and I mostly intend to use it when I'm running in ears and feeding the PA. I'm more and more often finding myself in situations where I really don't HAVE to bring and amp. I spent some time with it at home and used it at a rehearsal and a show this weekend.

At the rehearsal I ran it direct into a D.A.S. Audio Action M12A powered wedge and it sounded great. I would strongly consider using that combination for a small trio gig or something as the sound was very balanced and I could use the wedge for other things if need be. The gig was a community festival with a national artist headliner, we were on in the mid afternoon so setup time was limited. I did not use an amp at all, just let the monitor engineer give bass to whoever wanted it whether it was ears or wedges. The Subway DI sounded really good in the drum fill which was a Dynacord Cobra sub and top. The main PA was L'Acoustics and the engineers seemed happy with it and did not give me any trouble when I showed it to them. It was very nice to be able to walk in with a duffle bag with my ears, bass DI, and bass wireless and thats it.

This seems like a really good purchase so far. I'm looking forward to trying it out with my NS Design NXT tomorrow night on a restaurant gig.

Is there a possibility of this coming down the pipe? I am on a preamp hunt, and this would be fabulous.
