Mesa Subway Plus preamp

I just ordered this pre-amp/DI based upon reviews only. I can’t believe that as long as this pedal has been out, there aren’t any demo videos out there...at least that I can find.

The primary purpose of this preamp is to have it for situations where I need to go direct to FOH with no back line and that will fit in the front pocket of a gig bag. I won’t be integrating it into a pedal board. I currently have a D800 if I use this preamp and go into the Aux input of the D800 and keep everything flat on the D800 EQ, would that basically turn my D800 into a D800+ if I use this preamp for shaping my tone?
This is what I've been doing for over a year now. It also gives you 2 separate channels, d800 and d800+, use mute switch to select either channel.

Correct, it's an adjustable clean boost. It was provided as an additional tool for those players who find the need to sit a little forward on stage during some portions of a tube and don't want to dig in harder for tone reasons. Conversely, it can be used in the opposite way if somebody wants to dig in a little harder without "getting louder", some may find it handy for switching between basses of different sensitivities, etc. Different players will find different applications for this feature and some will find no use at all.

Would this boost work to drive the input of a D800 harder for more clipping?

This is exactly how it had seemed to me, so I have been using my Aguilar FX.

Wow, I should have came on here and asked these questions before I had gotten started playing with it.

Schooled by the pros - Thank you all for your help!

Hello everybody,
Is there a way, to run direct to a PA using the Mesa preamp plus and plug into an amp to use as a monitor at the same time?
Just curious....thanks, Rick

Thanks MOSOWBASS,

The preamp out is labeled as line level. Can I plug this into the instrument jack on the amp or does this need to be plugged into the effects return (if there is one)?
thanks,
Rick
I've always used effects return or aux in. I haven't tried it going into an amp preamp. I would have thought it would be OK if you keep the input level on the amp well down? There may be an impedance missmatch? You might be able to find an inline attenuator? @agedhorse

I connect the Preamp Out jack to the amp’s instrument input regularly without issue (with the amp’s preamp normally set flat). You can control the level of the signal going to the amp by using the Subway’s Master volume control (in combination with the Input control).

You can also use the Tuner Output jack to send an uneffected signal, but the signal won’t be muted when you press the Mute switch.

Thread revival....

I'm really keen on this preamp for a pedal board straight to poweramp\speakers (stage rig) and straight to mixer\FOH. Currently rocking an Aguilar TH DI, but the addition of HPF and extra mid band is really attractive.

I can't find any decent YT type demos of my question. Can the Plus generate any dirt\overdrive? And if so what is the general "flavour" or tone of the overdrive?

After I got an D-800+ amp, something I'd really like to see as a standalone pedal would be a small form one-knob dial "Voicing" pedal. I love that knob on the amp, but I'd love it as a standalone pedal too.

Many, many, times I could have gigged with a pre-amp equipped with variable high- and low-pass filters, and control over the input gain and output level: add a DI, and I would have been ready for virtually any gig.

Bonus points for the "voicing" knob, and for DSP-optimized power amps built into each speaker for the ultimate in mix & match, grab & go, gear that best meets the needs for each job.

Reviving this thread cause I am pretty interested in getting one of these to run into my Bam200. How does this preamp work as far as input impedances goes with a upright piezo (gage realist)?
Input impedance is 1M, generally works well with most Piezos. A few benefit from higher input impedance, but not many (and some work better with 1M than higher)

Mine arrived today. I plugged my upright with a Yamahiko pickup directly into the preamp and got a wonderful tone with very little eq’ing.

This preamp is killer. I wish I got this years ago.
