personally every thing after master of puppets sucks
Actually Newsted left in 2001. Trujillo joind in Feb 2003. So only seven years later.
At first I thought Trujillo left.
Then I looked at the date of the OP.

I must be getting old. Time sure flies by. I still remeber the cover of that magazine showing Newsted and Trujillo 'trading' bands like it was yesterday.
along with every album proceeding it beyond the first 4 released...

Are you sure you already listen to the early albums? Like Kill 'm All and so?

My favourite albums from Metallica and what I consider milestones in metal are:
- Master of Puppets
- Ride the Lightning
- ... And Justice For All
^ As a longtime metalhead I am biased toward those albums.
And if you listen carefully you can hear what the bass is contributing.
But I agree with you, it's very hard to hear the bass.
(Still, Cliff Burton is the reason why I started playing.)
As a bassist OTOH... I really enjoy what Jason was doing.
From the Black Album on it isn't metal anymore but more hardrock with bluesy guitar solos instead of fast metal shredding of the guitars.
I love Load and Reload... but it's a different kind of Metallica then the pioneering metalband from the 80s.
Less metal... more room for a bass to shine...
and I say this as a bassist who plays metal...
Still, I enjoy playing metal as a bassist, you just got to make it work. Metal has come a long way and there are many more metalbands who did let the bassist have more audible parts in general. (All depends on what kind of metal and what our definitions of subgenres are. I really like Iron Maiden and Helloween as a metal bassist. Steve and Markus are true masters of their trade.)

Well, ok you're right for Kill 'm All in that case.
I cannont pronouce for Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets. We sure can't hear the bass in ...And Justice For All, and then, well, I don't care.
I like all Metallica... It's just that the newer stuff compared to the old stuff is different... They're still Metallica.
