Metallica...what went wrong

The beatles broke up too early to start really sucking. I guarantee you if they wer3 still around people would be starting threads about what went wrong with the beatles... You can't expect to remain great and relevant in a long career. At one point that's it, you've squeezed all the creative juices you had. I have yet to see any exception to this.

As for U2...wow... you must be a big fan. U2 hasn't made a musically relevant or at least interesting record for give or take 20 years. After that it's generic arena rock for the most part, sometimes bordering on easy listening... self-parodying too. As a commercial band they peaked in 1991 or so. I mean how can anyone say that Invisible is not a by the number post 2000's U2 song. It's as generic as white bread. Theyr'e on autopilot.

What happened?

Life. They grew up. Inspirations changed, band dynamics changed. The music industry changed. Music media and the way its consumed changed. Personal musical preferences of the band members changed.

Metallica has three different phases-
1.first albums up to justice- they didn't care about the business or the critics.....they just made fast angry music with the occasional introspective melody.
2. Black album- St anger ( bob rock years) - band was getting into their late 30s/40s and was tired of playing whiplash every night for the last 20 years. They tried something different. Some of it is great...some good....most of it crap. *shrug* they still actually don't care...becuaee they're doing it "their way" ( see: terrible snare sound on St anger. This would've been an OK album except for that....)
3. Death magnetic- current- they are legends....and they're riding that train. James had some things to piss him off after St anger and wrote some trully heavy songs again for death magnetic. Too little too late? Pretty much.
The whole world has already judged the band and there's next to no way to turn it around at this point.


James hetfield is still and always has been my biggest guitar influence / hero. However.....just like them.... I don't submerge myself in ONLY metal nowadays, and don't really care what Metallica do or don't do musically from here on out. It'd be awesome if jason came back ( nothing against Robert- he's bad ass) and they did an album like justice..... but it'll never happen so....eh. whatever.

I love the Black album, and like Load and Reload. Never got into their early stuff. But I agree, they need to just hang it up and call it a day. Their insistence to continue to play and record new stuff, even when it is awful, is just sad. Their Grammy performance was terrible.

I think part of the problem is that James is no longer angry. He went to therapy, got happy, and now, his voice just doesn't have that fire and anger it used to have. He's like a teddy bear now, and it doesn't work.

The band that did thee first 4 albums and the one that did black, load, and reload are just not the same band. Same people ( as justice and garage days) but not the same band/ music. I can completely understand when factoring in age and musical taste how someone could like those albums and not the earlier stuff......but it boggles my mind. Its like seeing a cat bark.

You can't truly compare their first two albums to any of the others. After the first two they lost two of the major influences. Cliff died and Dave left / got fired. That being said, I'm of the mind that the black album was the beginning of the end for them. Mainly because of the main stream aspect. I applaud them for continuing to make the almighty dollar, but hate that they sold out to do it.

a.2) Kicked Mustaine out
b) Sold out to mainstream rock with Black album and MTV videos
c) Attacked napster for "stealing their art"
d) Cut off long hair
e) No more guitar solos
f) All of the above?

Edit - I honestly dont know which of the a's came first

Exactly. Rock n' roll is a young man's game. Name me one rock band that had better output when they were in their middle age/senior years than when they were young.
