Metallica...what went wrong

Hehe, yep. I was never really much of a Metallica fan anyway, so I guess I should just keep my fat, hairy, white ass out of this thread.

..And justice for all is where they peaked in my world. Black boomed and sandman made them explode into the mainstream stratosphere but that's when they lost me as a fan. There were a few good tunes on there like Wherever I May Roam but unforgiven still makes me want to vomit. Then they did that ****ing orchestra thing. I havnt followed them since hearing that crap and I couldn't tell you what or how many albums they've put out since. I still like some of the old stuff with cliff but usually turn it off after 1 or 2 tunes. Just not into them anymore but damn it can't be easy being successful that young and for so long, so hats off to a rare accomplishment in the music industry. I still get pissed though when I think of how they booted Dave Mustaine out, that was sooo cold!
Anyway the answer to what happened is easy friend. THEY SOLD OUT!!! But to their credit they sold out many shows and albums while selling out the old fans. They forgot how to jam metal up our ass and got all pristine. I guess they can still spit and try to act badass, but I ain't buyin it.

Yob. SubRosa. Melechesh. Primordial. Celtic Frost/Triptykon. Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind. Huey Lewis and the News, Testament. Exodus. Dio (he was already close to 40 when he joined Black Sabbath). Type O Negative. Darkest Hour. Weedeater. Ludicra. Agalloch. Bell Witch. Voltaire.
Go to youtube and look for "and Jason for all" if you want to hear how that album would have sounded with bass guitar on it. Brilliant IMHO... with bass it would have been my favorite album over Master of Puppets.
Agreed. Undertow is pretty awesome, but I prefer Lateralus, and if I'm going to listen to an album straight through, 10,000 Days is pretty amazing.
This. Some of us actually get more angry and more rebellious the more we learn about the workings of the world.
Which in turn makes the music we make harder and angrier the older we get.
Metallica still rules and kicks ass to this very day.

Meh. With Dave kicked out you got 4.5 good Metallica albums plus (insert link to Megadeth equivalent of this thread that determines official TB consensus count of antebellum albums) three? good Megadeth albums.
8ish good albums by two bands is better than the hope that Metallica wouldn't have gone downhill with him anyway, right?
Yep. This whole idea that people can only write good music when they're young, in the rock genre, is just silly.
I can understand people who think Metallica died with Cliff Burton. I really don't get people who think they stopped being good when they kicked Dave out.
From what I heard, he was being a royal pain in the ass. I'd have given him the boot, too.
You got that right. I'm more pissed off at the state of the world now at age 35 than I ever was as a teen.
Expect them to write good music? Sure.
Expect them to write the SAME music? That is both silly and presumptuous.
I like their Metallica's early albums better too. But if you forget who they were in the past and think of more recent work as being from different people (which, 25-30 years later it basically is) I think it stands just fine on its own. It is just different music from different people at a different time.
