Metallica...what went wrong

You got that right. I'm more pissed off at the state of the world now at age 35 than I ever was as a teen.

Yeah, but historically music is marketed (and bought by) youth, no?

Besides, us old timers can't write good tunes about what upsets us (ie my pension is going to the crapper, my dental plan sucks, and no matter how hard I pull in my bootstraps I can't achieve social mobility) that translate well to a youthful audience who has no experience with those things.

Hehe, well that's not really the things that upset me. At least not the things I want to convey through creative expression.

And who says music is just for the young? Music should transcend age (and all other conventions). And it frequently does. :)

I didn't cite them because they're not a clear case of improvement as they get older, but more a case of the newer albums being different but still very, very good, but I've highly enjoyed Neurosis' evolution as a band, and I think their music is still quite powerful and their lyrics are still great.

I'm sorry to break the news to you, but we haven't gotten good feedback about your latest tune "swollen prostate" and we've decided to drop you from the label. It was a difficult decision, but I'm sure you'll do well. We just couldn't adjust to your more "adult" themes. :p

Yep, Neurosis are certainly a prime example of a band that just keeps evolving and delivering the goods! And they're no spring chickens anymore.

I don't know... I first heard Metallica with Enter Sandman, and I was about 10. I never heard anything like that at the time and I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I became a fan of Metallica after the Black album...I didn't like Load as much and didn't bother with Reloaded or St. Anger, but I felt like Robert rejuvenated the band and bought Death Magnetic... I personally like it better than the Black Album. I then went back and got everything before The Black Album, and while i believe that everything before the Black Album was better than it, I still feel Death Magnetic is their greatest album.

I think a lot of people dislike them because they believe they sold out. It's ridiculous. They worked their butts off to record albums, promote them, and tour to make money, to be able to happily live off of their passion for music. I find it hard to believe that any hard working musician wouldn't do the same. I like my job, I make decent money, but if I ever had that opportunity I'd sign the contract in a heartbeat. It is really hard being a metal or punk musician; those genres are for rebelling, so they're constantly playing with a double-edged sword.

Neurosis is a perfect example of a band that was better and more ferocious when they were younger. Listen to their first 2 albums when they were a hardcore band. When they changed their sound on the next 3 albums, they were still ferocious. For the last 12+ years, they have 9 minute songs with 7 minutes of wank and 2 minutes of spank.

Meh. With Dave kicked out you got 4.5 good Metallica albums plus (insert link to Megadeth equivalent of this thread that determines official TB consensus count of antebellum albums) three? good Megadeth albums.

8ish good albums by two bands is better than the hope that Metallica wouldn't have gone downhill with him anyway, right?

True, but I have never really cared for Megadeath. I just thought Dave got the shaft how they left him hanging with no money outta town and told to grab a bus, then laughed about it in cliff em all. No one deserves that but it must have made for some deep angry desire to produce something.

The type of metal Metallica played (thrash, speed–whatever) is based on angst, rebelliousness, disillusionment etc. Once they made millions and got a little older, they no longer lived the hardcore lifestyle which is IMO essential to great rock or metal. Big comfortable houses in super-nice areas, fancy cars, good food and vacations around the world doesn’t produce good metal.

Like Jack Black said in The School of Rock, “You’re not hardcore, unless you live hardcore."

Joe Walsh made a pretty awesome record about luxury
