Metal's Becoming a Cliche

That was not meant for you, but rather the person who said that the sword tarts were better than most deathmetal. I completely understood that you were trying to show deathmetal as one genre and deathcore as another with those two bands.

We should all just let this far gone thread die.

Ah, I see. Misunderstood ya.

Metal threads don't die - they get trolled relentlessly until everyone gets fed up and stops posting - then reincarnate as another metal thread a week later. :p

when i decided to play metal, i was in highschool and i wanted to rebel from conformity and hive mentality...

nowadays, metal really is a CLICHE.

there are so many rules and code of conduct, that it is a lot worse than normal life.

and worse of all .... THERE ARE NO CHICKS IN A METAL GIG! *grumble grumble*

I don't know what tha phuck your talking about think of the metal genre as a building, all the things we love about metal are still their-but on the first floor. Now all the stupid **** that were seein now is like the new management that bought out the company and made more floors which are filled with tight jeans, straightened hair over the eyes, the well known and very stupid crabcore, weak head banging, lazy guitars and even lazier bass, hardcore dancing/prancing, and a bunch of other gay ****

I like Slipknot. I think people pick on them too much when talking about metal, but they've got some really awesome content. For what it's worth, I only like about a half of the stuff they put out, maybe less, and it varies from album to album. I like the first 5 songs from Psychosocial, and then I dislike almost the whole album until Snuff. Some of it is just too cliche.

By the way, I don't remember posting a picture of myself, but I do own a couple Slipknot shirts, so I figured I'd respond anyways =p Not that I've thought about this thread in forever.

I agree for the most part, but there are a few bands here and there that spark my interest. I'm really digging Doomriders these days. Not too much screaming, or inaudible vocals, good lyrics, and much less flashy playing. Just solid heavy music. It may be a bit more to the punk and hardcore side of things than what most people would call metal these days.

I've been rocking a lot of Doomriders lately.

How true you were my metal friend. This thread went a month without a post but now is back. Scary thing I like all things metal except this thread. At 39 yrs old I still only play thrash/speed/death metal with my band. I just cringe at these metal threads though. My metal is better than your metal because this that and the other thing.

Remember this Black Sabbath started it, Slayer brought it to the edge, Suffocation brutally killed everything at the edge and beyond. Then there were other bands in between.

This wasn't about that. This was, as the topic was stated, that metal is becoming a cliche. As much as I hate Death metal, it's still a strong art form. A bunch of kids with guitars tuned to elephants and shredding their vocal chords into mics is not.

as i do somewhat enjoy a few mindless deathcore bands it is annoying to go to local band shows to see a bunch of bands that sound the same i can only take so much of it. im more of a prog guy. im a sucker for a long song filled with odd time sigs polyrythms all that fun stuff. metal is not going down the drain i belive this deathcore **** is going to blow over soon as every band is copying eachother just as glam did before it died. for fellow prog heads like me give me a few bands you enjoy and ill check em out here.

the only thing i have against this deathcore ******** is that its really hard for a band who doesent "gasp" play mindless breakdowns chugs and powerchords to get a gig.

and as for women i dont go pussy hunting at metal shows fair enough

As a metalhead, I'll agree wholeheartedly that a good deal of metal nowadays is in it for the badass factor, and less for the great "shot-in-the-arm" music metal was once about with bands like Deep Purple Mk II, Metallica, Megadeth, and Death. That said, Megadeth is still putting out good stuff, and personally, I don't find Avenged Sevenfold's stuff from City of Evil on that bad.

Great point from the OP. Here are my 2 cents.

Now please understand I came up listening in the 70's and 80's. By the mid 80's I was already saying that in general nothing worth listening to came out after 1975, across genres. It was a general statement and in my view fairly accurately drew a line in time after which one was more likely than not to be disappointed. Very subjective and narrow. But fun to say as it would get the discussion rolling.

I grew up loving hard rock and metal. But I noticed shifts laster on that I didn't like. A new band, Metallica, had changed the direction and not in my liking. Never bought one of their albums. My last Maiden purchase was Piece of Mind. I love that band, just not their sound after that album. These are narrow and extreme views I'm sure almost no one will share and that's ok. I respect both of those bands so much it's crazy. The musicianship is there to say the least.

My point is simply to say that metal for me hasn't been metal in decades. All these new sub-genres are not my flavor. Fine. What kills me is the formulaic sameness I hear in band after band.

As was said earlier in the thread -- 90% of ALL music anymore is crap, regardless of genre. Sad but true. Where's the musicianship and originality? And where is a good old metal band?

Just my opinions and tastes to help clarify and expand on the point as I see it.

For me, one of the hardest things for me is finding a band (or even guys to jam with) that isn't into metal and shut out to everything else! There are some metal bands I like (Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.), but for me, the gutteral screaming takes it too far.

I'm not a big fan of the guttural screaming stuff either (except for Burzum and Death, their vocals are just unreal). In fact, one of the things I love about Iron Maiden is Bruce Dickinson's absolutely unreal-awesome voice.
