Metal's Becoming a Cliche

This reminds me of a similar argument I was having on a different site.

This chick was convinced that Bring me the horizon was better than black Sabbath. To prove her wrong I put the tabs for NIB next to chelsea. Chelsea was mostly done Open E and had no string changes.

Yeah, so far as I know, metal's been a cliche since I was too young to know what a cliche was. Witness, This is Spinal Tap was made in the early eighties (1982?) and Metalocalypse is now several years old. People have been making fun of metal cliches for decades.

I think metal became cliche the moment it started selling albums that referred to it as "metal."

If it helps any of you younger cats out, things aren't getting worse; when I was in a band whose set consisted primarily of Slayer, Metallica, and Sepultura covers (it was the early '90s) we had to bill ourselves with a bunch of truly awful thrash acts, or put a show on ourselves. There's always been crappy metal, it's nothing new.

There's always been good metal and crappy metal but now it's 99% crappy metal. It's been pretty dire for the last 12-14 years but now that hipsters have invaded the metal genre it's as bad as it can get. I cringe at the state of contemporary metal (and most of it isn't even metal but downtuned rock music with double bass/growled vocals that somehow gets labeled as 'metal')

While I totally agree that Black Sabbath are a whole lot better than Bring me the Horizon, I don't think that's a very good way to prove it..

venom that's a good point. It was just a quick search and pulling the first bass tabs that came up in ulitimateguitar. Maybe going back and checking the lyrics, guitar tabs, and drum parts from different songs might work better for side by side comparison?

That's very true, but when I posted them side by side it was more to show talent rather than sound.

The person I was debating with was all about how bmth better than sabbath on all levels. I can respect her opinion on what she prefers but I won't accept the they're more talented lol.

then again talent is subjective.

Lol!!!

this + :crying:

Hipsters ruin everything trying to make it ironic or whatever. Leave it alone, get back on your fixie and pedal your arse back to PBRland.

Some hipster was playing some loud obnoxious crap one day and I asked him about. He gave the typical response "you've probably never heard of it"

my reply, "you're probably right. I try avoid bands that suck to much to play a paying gig."

They're a DEATH Metal band...What did u expect? Death Metal/Deathcore (especially Deathcore) is an immediate sign telling you to lower your standards.

I have to disagree. Death Metal is not just noise. Death metal can be complex and can be really fun to listen to. You can have Melodic Death Metal, Neoclassic Death Metal, Technical Death Metal. These all take great musicianship to play. Deathcore on the other hand is mostly just extremely detuned guitars and bass, with blast beats and double bass the whole time. And you have about a breakdown for the whole song with some possible tremelo picking and maybe some riffs. Alot of deathcore is crap but some stuff ( very little of it ) is actually good. I don't think anybody should get confused between the diffrence between Death Metal and Deathcore. Because if you truly listen to these two genres of music they are two completely different things.
