Metal's Becoming a Cliche

I went to see the local metal heroes on Fri night. They write proper "tunes". Last time they had a pro soundman out front and it was really good, amps all mic'd up, volume under control. This time the support band drummer was mixing the same setup. They played good enough and loud enough to draw in and turn over the crowd three times in one set! They could have been playing to a packed bar but melody and tones were obliterated by sheer volume.

Numetal? Like Slipknot?

Just because I don't like the overall genre doesn't mean I that there aren't exceptions.

Besides who do you prefer to be in the music world? Justin Bieber or Paul Gray?

who am I kidding, I'm just talking out of my ass on this one. I don't even know what numetal really is. All I know is that when I think of heavy metal I think of Black Sabbath and Metalica, and slipknot (not a big fan of a lot of their songs, but wait and bleed, purity, and before I forget are pretty good). As far as anything else that people try to relate to metal it just comes off as full on distortion, breakdowns, screaming, and white noise. So it doesn't matter what the adjective is there's a difference between metal and noise.

So who gave you the job of defining what metal is?

Was there a meeting?

Just played a metal festival yesterday, and I have to say I think my band made the most of our fretboards. Music was just binary code to the other bands really. I know the feeling of awful cookie-cutter metal. But, it made us stand out, and I think it worked in our favor!

No way I'm gonna read all this thread. But, I went to hear my son's band one night. It was so loud I had to stand outside the door. Plus, nothing but total distortion and rough screaming. It was chaos, yet he says he understands it. Sorry, but I don't get it, and I don't understand all the different "types" of metal. What is it with all the distortion? The seeming anger? The chaos? Where's the f**** music?

Yeah, I played in a bar recently and the band before us was just like this. Not a hint of music, just an incredibly loud (even with hearing protection) unrestrained physical assault that I found as enjoyable as getting beat with a club. I've heard chainsaws that had more musical content.
