Mexican Food

I never would have thought of having Mexican food for breakfast. I don't even know if the Mexican restaurants here are open for breakfast.

Unfortunately for me, I start work at 7pm and most Mexican food joints around me open at 9:30 or 10:00. Baffles my mind as the people I see walking around, catching the bus and waiting for rides early in the morning are almost all Mexican dudes.

Mexican restaurants come in two varieties for me:

A) Those that serve margaritas.

B) Those that do not.

If I am dining at an establishment that falls under group A, my priorities are usually beverage quality over food quality. For group B, my expectations for food are much higher.

Down here in greater San Diego, group A is Fidel's hidden near the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Quality margaritas. I have never found their food to not meet my sloshed expectations. In group B, Vallarta makes some seriously tasty, fresh, and large burritos. Not super authentic but my favorite taco shop to stop by after, during, and before band practice.

Hmm...my favorite Mexican food....

Here where I am now, my current favorite Mexican place is called El Real in Lawrenceville, GA. Super good food and authentic recipes. They have conchinita pibil and molcajetes on the menu that remind me of things I've had while in Mexico. Plus - it's the only place I've ever been where beer and margaritas come in small, medium and large sizes.

Favorite Mexican food overall was a restaurant in Monterrey, Mexico called la Valentina. There were a lot of interesting things on the menu there and everything was delicious. Eating dinner at 10:00 PM was an adjustment, though.

My favorite breakfast burrito was from a little teeny hole in the wall place in Holtville, CA. I think it was called The Taco Shop, but I'm not sure (it's been almost 20 years), but at the time it was a little blue building on a corner on the main drag through town and just down the block from a big citrus shed. The breakfast burrito was huge and probably weighed at least two pounds - and totally crammed full of sausage, eggs, potatoes and cheese. I wonder if that place is still there.

All the talk...now I'm craving one of these with octopus!

Probably because of all the Puerto Ricans that infiltrated my family and the sheer amount of Puerto Ricans in the Bronx when I was growing up (I was the only Mexican where I grew up - except my mother ;) ) I really prefer island food as opposed to Mexican.

Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican food ftw!

Those guys had two restaurants up here, but sold one to an employee a few years ago. All the kids worked up here at one time or another, and they are all good bartenders, for sure. The food up here is slightly generic, but yeah, good enough after a Perfect/Cadillac or two.

another imitator is Alberta's! That old hag got me pretty good! Alberta's is horrible. And like gecko said, all the logos are pretty much exactly the same

Oh yeah, the one on El Camino Real? Not good. My fave local place is Taqueria De Anda on Tustin Ave in Orange! There's one on 4th in Santa Ana too. There's a new place that's opened up on Chapman Ave called El Chef Tacos. Pretty good. Café Rio on Irvine Blvd. is a chain, but it's pretty good. Taco Adobe in the Circle is good too.

They're weird...like a cold, super chunky soup but super tasty. I think they're called cocktails.

Yes I think you're right...I've seen them and the way you describe is kinda how I imagine them tasting. There is a restaurant walking distance from my house of the "ones that serve margaritas" variety that I really like. My wife and I went there for dinner once, and I had a quail quesadilla that was really good. I think they serve those cocktails there too

Interesting. They have another location in North County San Diego called Norte's. Only eaten there once. Found the food to be slightly better, but the drinks weren't as overpoured as their southern sister restaurant.:(

Yes!

Not good.

You're tellin me :(

I've yet to try Taqueria De Anda; it's come highly recommended and I'm on and around Tustin Ave a lot but still haven't gone. I've driven by the one on 4th; oddly enough, there is a REALLY good Mexican teriyaki place on Grand and...1st? Or 4th? Right by the DMV. Cheaper than a mug too.

If the restaurant serves Burritos Cabesa or Lengua, it's a good start.

But the best, because I was always drunk at the time - a few years ago, was from a husband/wife combo that served Soft Tacos at some Palm Springs danceclub. He told me he marinated the meat in Orange Juice overnight.
