I have both the Bass Buddy and the Double Four. They are both great through headphones. The Bass Buddy is a better preamp - it offers more options for fiddling with tone and has a compressor. The Double Four has a more basic preamp. They are completely different items. If all you are just using it for is practice through headphones I wouldn't get either because they are overkill.

Interested in listening through speaker(s) in a family area. I have options for headphones (DI boxes, Vox, amp heads, etc). I also have a studio in another part of the house. Thanks. So far, the Traynor sb110/112 or JPB Dual Fours are leading the pack. Been making some calls to see what it would take to secure one or the other. Input still very welcome as I might not fully resolve until Wednesday. I'd like to talk to JPB and L&M, but both hold business hours. Will see what reverb.com has to say. Debating a trip over border to L&M but there is a $200/day max purchase without penalties when coming back from Canada.

While somewhat larger than you described, I picked up this little practice amp (Fender Rumble 25) specifically to leave in our living room. It's heavy enough to remain stationary if you practice while standing, controls are basic, it sounds great, my wife likes the look-- so she welcomes it to be on display, and it cost just less than $100 :D

Did I mention it sounds great?

Best of luck on your search!

If your looking at battery powered headphone amps make sure to check out the Electro Harmonix headphone amp. On/off only, but you can use your bass to eq, it's made of metal not plastic, and really sounds good, about the same price as the Vox. I don't use mine much except before a gig to warm up with, but it's a quality product IMO.

Bought one of these off of EBay for $349 for this same reason as you are looking for. As an added bonus since it is 300 watts I have actually been able to use it at rehearsals with a LOUD drummer and it only weighs about 25 pounds.

Is that a 10" driver? (too lazy to research)

Heres a 'blemished' one for $270... looks pretty nice!

+1 RX!

The Roland Micro Cube Bass RX is what I'm using.
The RX is easier to deal with than my EA Micro 300 head and (blown) Wizzy10 for noodling in the bedroom or living-room.

The Promethean was the one I was trying to make come to mind earlier.

I still think the Traynor is a great way to go for anyone in N America, I'll quite likely pick up some Traynor stuff when I move back.
