Yeah, that happened last band practice. I had read the article on playing fingerstyle in Death Metal and remembered the sound freqs. that are normally "open" so I tried boosting Mids but it didn't have a very good result.

Had great succsess with my Fender P bass, a Ibanez Tubescreamer, full bass, full treble and cutting mids, especially the low ones. Punchy and great and so clear that i almost didnt dare to play.
 
well mid-rangey and cut-through aren't the same thing. Jazz basses are really mid-shy but "cut" well in the right circumstances. Some mistake their clarity as midrange. P's are the mid-range monsters, and while some hear them as blurry, their fat midrange can helps them sit just right in a mix and be heard clearly.
