I have a Warwick Thumb and it cuts through like crazy. Also, listening to Level 42, Status and Alembic cut pretty nice.

Is it possible that the problem has nothing to do with the equipment but rather the volume at which the other instruments are turned up?
I'd think any bass should be heard regardless of the make/model.
You're joking, right?
A good Jazz Bass is as midrangy as Hell!![]()
Without a sound guy, i.e. for jamming, a P-bass especially with a pick. I've heard Stringrays are good too since they are very bright, but I don't like their unbalanced sound between strings.
Grow your fingernails long.

IMO cutting (if you stick to the instrument's influence) is more an issue of pickup wiring and placement than anything else. The Stingray sound isn't my thing, but trebly sounds picked up closer to the bridge cut best IMO.
Game over.
