Try a pick, there is absolutely nothing to lose. Also if you listen to a band like Pantera, all of that tone is a Spector. Listen to Cowboys from Hell and just listen to the bass, it cuts through easily.

The spector is monster, the only time I played one it sounded very very similar to my old Thumb NT, and my Thumb NT cut through everything!

The bass you have is fine.

I pretty much agree with you with the Cowboys from Hell album. However if you hear Pantera in concert it's hard to really distinguish the bass over all the screeching guitar and screaming. Great band though I was always a fan.
