October is quite a month for Green Day albums! on October 14th 1997 nimrod was released. i was 11 years old and i bought it the day it came out. i got into them after insomniac, so this was my first album that i was anticipating. i know it's a bit all over the place but i love this album, i love the guitar tones on hitchin a ride and i feel like songs such as scattered and jinx/haushinka are really underrated. this was their first p-bass album!

Given the number in my name I guess I better sign up. When I was signing up for my first e-mail address in high school I was a huge Green Day fan and I needed a number, so I went with 1039 and have used it every since.

I had all their stuff in high school from the 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to Nimrod. After that I started to loose interest. Warning had some good songs on it, but after that I was just into other stuff. And with their newer stuff I just feel too old. Their stuff is marketed to that pop-punk teen demographic. So, I have not listened to enough of their new stuff to have a good opinion about it.

Anyways, on their early stuff Mike's playing was pretty good. Made me want to play bass. When someone wants to hear a song on bass Longview is my go to. The speed at the beginning of 86, jeez.

so rumor has it that Green Day has been in the studio working on a new album. Billie and Tre have posted a few photos and tagged them OTIS and REVRAD. People are suspecting that Otis is a new studio that the band owns that they are recording in, and that revrad is an abbreviation of the new album's name. Mike posted a picture of a ric last night and wrote "making poopie happen!!", so i'm getting real excited for a new album now! can't wait to hear how green day sounds with a ric

so there was a college radio interview yesterday with Green Day's touring keyboard player. He said that right now the band was half way done recording a new album and then they were going to practice all summer and then start a huge world tour in September. It was posted on a fan site and then GD's management reached out to the website and had them pull the article because apparently it wasn't 100% accurate. I think they're being pretty tight lipped this time around since they had so much promo and publicity for the trilogy and it ended up bombing pretty bad. The radio interview has been pulled from spotify as well, I think they didn't want anything floating around and spreading rumors before the band makes an official statement. I'm really looking forward to what they are coming out with next. I haven't had this much personal anticipation for a Green Day album since Warning haha

I love the look of the G3, and the sound is good, it worked really well for the early Green Day records. I know he used a P on Dookie, but the G3 would have worked well on the recording, and honestly insomniac could have sounded good with a p-bass, but yeah, once nimrod hit i don't really see the G3 working anymore. I can't imagine how Nice Guys Finish Last or Scattered would have sounded with the G3, and then once billie started using les paul juniors there was just no going back to the G3.

Actually I'm pretty sure he used the Gibson on dookie, he didn't get his first fender p bass until nimrod in which that bass sounds incredible on that album. The actual p bass he used on nimrod, I forget what year it was that the bass was made, maybe early 70's or late60's billyjoe actually bought it for him for his birthday,but he still has it and uses it only in the studio for all his recording. He refers to this bass as " the weapon ".

I don't have a lot of studio experience,but from what I gather from reading is that bands and musicians tend to use instruments outside their preferences for studio purposes. Mike dirnt has used a vintage fender p bass that he calls his weapon in the studio since the nimrod album. It's very different to see him possibly using a ric. To me Rics are nice basses, good quality and do sound good if that's what your into. I stick with fender personally, but have played a ric a few times. My personal opinion is that yes they have a nice tone but like Paul Simonin has said " they sound stringy " it's like the sound doesn't come from the soul of the bass. But that's my opinion. I haven't listened to new Green Day since American idiot which is an amazing album, and I love all the stuff from the 80's and 90's, warning has a few good songs but I respect it cause it's still punk rock in their own right.

Dookie was done with a P/J that they rented, it was in an interview from Bass Player Magazine from 2012, the article's online if you wanna google it. for the longest time i thought he used the G3 on that album, his live tone at the time came pretty close to how the p sounded on dookie. i do agree that the p tone on nimrod is great

i doubt he's using the ric for every song, maybe just one or two, and i'm pretty sure he won't be using them live, he's got way too many ties with fender haha

and yeah, i like green day's older stuff a lot more too. i hated AI when it first came out but overall i don't mind it now, and there's a couple songs on there that i really love. 21st century breakdown is ok, i liked it a lot when it came out but it hasn't stuck with me. the trilogy that they released a few years back had some great songs on it and some pretty lousy songs too, but the bass tones on that album are great, mike used the new fender super bassman head on it, i think it may be my favorite bass sound he's had. i'm really looking forward to seeing where they go next
