Mike Gordon fans?

mike gordon has been a big influence on my playing... and purchasing.
his tone is for sure very hifi, but unique all the same. check out the phish website for the first two phish shows. he sounds great as always!!!

Long-time Cactus fan here as well. He's always struck me as kind of the extension of, or next-generation Phil Lesh. Phil was definitely a BIG influence on Mike, but he can still just sit in the pocket and groove on only a few notes.

I've found his tone to be a bit thin as well, but I think it's something you have to hear live in an arena. Recordings don't really do him justice. Anyone remember PLM? There was an article in BP many years ago detailing his live rig, which was some ridiculous $20k setup at the time, if memory serves.

The free downloads have pretty good sound for 256k mp3's, so check them out!

...at least 2 bassplayer covers, legions of fans, headlining the biggest festiville on the country for two nights (opposite bruce springsteen)... i'm half with you on this one, Gordo gets his due.

for those in the know, it can be frustrating talking to non-phish fans about their collective and individual musical abilities. so it goes.

I agree with this statement. He seems to have taken the style that Phil had and ran with it and made it his own. He has played some great lines over the years, but the whole child endangerment fiasco made me very suspicious indeed!

Gordon attended the hearing, but the parents of the girl did not. According to the spokesperson, the family had already been in touch with the DA's office in hopes that the case would be dismissed.

In a statement released last month jointly by Gordon and the parents, they said, "It is now clear to all involved that this was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and we look forward to putting this matter behind us."

I'm with you on the kiddie thing but very much a non issue.

I don't get the thin thing.I guess maybe a tad sterile between the pick and Modulus neck. Its always been so defined though. You can always hear every note he plays.

I remember having front row reserved tickets during a run in 98 or 99.. It just so happened they were right in front of his setup. Thin....um no...I could feel the vibration days later :)

He is by far my major influence. By influence I don't mean I model his playing style (I;m all fingers) but more his vibe. He made bass playing look like fun to me. Just a simple head bob and a thick gooeey tone. Nothing flashy . He is why I play today.

I will say his solo stuff is on the obscure side. Can't get into it. I did enjoy some of the Kottke stuff.

I too am a Mike fan. I finally got to see them live (first time) this past friday at Hampon. Incredible show, and definitely not a thin bass sound. He was up inthe mix and sounded great. Here's hoping this reunion sticks.

You guys d/l the shows for free off of livephish.com Mike has a great sound and was on point the whole run....sounds great...wish I could have gone...but I am going to Asheville to see Phish in June...can't wait!

LightGroove, I think you said it best....it is his 'groove'...man he can find a groove and keeps Sharin' in the Groove!

I live in VT and have known, played and performed publicly with Mike Gordon over the last 15 years, although I would not call him a "friend" simply because we are not that close. Mike is a top rate player, totally professional and the nicest millionaire I have ever met. What I admire most is that his playing has a unique personality like any great player who deserves respect.

Any bass player is going to sound "thin" on a soundboard tape recorded "direct" in a hockey rink.

I think that's one thing that makes Phish so popular. They all seem like humble normal cats doing something they love to do. I've crossed paths with all of them but Trey and they are all just really laid back. I can't think of the restaraunt in Burlington but Page and his manager meet there about once a week to go over stuff. Trey also with his family. You wouldn't know they were there per a friend of mine.

Anyways I hope for the best for these guys. I got really bummed out at the post hiatus shows I hit even Coventry. Just meh....

The traffic , the scene, the music was all headed down hill for me. Sounds like they have a new tactic. :hyper:
