thanks, Bill. Like i said, a pickguard has always been part of a j bass to me- the clear is a compromise. The J bass body doesn't look right to me without the pg- then, when you add that offsetting shape, it is a thing of timeless beauty. The tort my be a bit busy and clashing with the grain that is why I did not go for anything pearloid. Wish I had white block options. Do have the option to go with a black blocked neck but didn't think it would tie in too well and i could use saving the $, do dots it is on the neck which I have yet to see. This bass will be done tomorrow and then I will agonize with putting out for overnight and using it on a show in LA, or waiting for it to get here ups ground ( three working days )-
Knowing me, there goes another c note in overnight shipping.. and those c notes aren't as easy as they used to be!

Wow Adrian, that is looking gorgeous. I have a question about the Lull's that you can chime in on.

I normally prefer 34" scale basses...all of the Lull 5's are 35" scale. There are some 35" scale basses that are easy to play and others that feel every in the 35" scale...where do the Lull 5 strings come in? Are they easy to play or do you feel the full 35" scale?

I hope you are well...

Mark

Imho, Lull 5 strings are easy as 34 scale. I switch a lot between my Lull M5 and a 34 scale Wilkins bass and never notice much difference. I do have big hands though.
Adrian, I am looking forward to the pics of the finished bass!

Well, Mark, I am about to find out for sure. You see, I miss out on some fantastic basses because some DO feel every bit their 35in scale and it becomes painful to play for extended periods. The artist I work with right now likes to do 3 hour shows. I love him and it's a great gig, but 3 hours of stretching your wrist the wrong way sucks.
What I remember from the Lulls I have gigged with is thaty they were light and extremely comfortable to play. Go figure, I am not even sure they are the full 19mm string spacing I love, but I remember how effortless and fatigue free it was to play. And sounded great on the gig and I couldget around the neck as well as I could be expected to ;) - and so when it cme time to get a companion for my Nordy, I remembered all these good things and no bad things and using the Nord pups and Audere pre I already know sounds great, this bass should be quite a pleaser. Yet again it is everything i said i would not do again: figured top, 35 in scale, singlecoil hum, etc.. i'll probably love it! at least i hope i do! :hyper:

Gorgeous top Adrian, and I like how the white guard looks on it, but I'm not a fan of jazz basses with pickguard and no control plate. They look as if there were something missing.

Have you thought about having a custom pickguard made with a more rounded contour where the control plate fits?

I am not even sure they are the full 19mm string spacing I love, but I remember how effortless and fatigue free it was to play. . .

Lulls have 18-mm string spacing the bridge. I've always stayed away from Lulls because of the 35" scale, but it is comforting to hear that you find them ultra comfortable.

I really like 18-mm-string-spacing-at-the-bridge necks, like 5-string Smith necks. . .

Looking forward to hear your review when it comes it.

BTW, you can't go wrong with either clear or white pickguard, but I would certainly put a pickguard there.

That looks really nice!:D I would be torn between leaving it naked or going with a more classic Jazz look. If that were the case, I'd go with the white. But then again, that quilt is to nice to put anything over it. Oh the choices...
What fretboard are you going with?

well, even though this thread ain't gettin' much love :crying:,
here are a couple more pics. I'm digging both pickguards but surprisingly favoring the white. I am taking both.
The knob layout looks good- there will be be twi mini switches and the led but the will run parallel to the strings , by the bridge. Not as indicated here.
Anyways, here are the pics:

Man, that looks freaking awesome!!!!

Are you not putting a control plate on the bass? If so, IMO, the p/g looks sooooo out of place.

My vote is for the white pickguard--I think it looks much better than the clear. Personally, I'd put the control plate on there too, but that's just me.

Looking very nice, though. Should make for one smokin' bass when it's done.

Ya, +1 on the no pg.... I'm definitely looking into a Lull or Nordy w/o a pg for my next J.

Great looking bass Bro!

Many times on J bass type designs, the neck pocket sits high enough that there is too much room between the strings and body for certain playing styles (slap, etc.). This bothers some and not others.

I too see a pickguard as kind of a disconnect with a fancy top, but also see a fancy top as kind of a disconnect with a 'traditional' J Bass type instrument. While the clear guards always look kind of nasty to me (pure IMO), that top with the white or mint guard looks pretty sweet to me.

That looks like it will be a nice bass.

Looks great Adrian!

+1 for a mint green or aged white PG.

I've seen some quilt maple topped Sadowsky's with PG's that blew my mind. (Tom Bowlus has a Tobaccoburst Sadowsky with Quit maple top and a Tort PG. His J bass is the stuff dreams are made of!)

Can't wait to hear your review of the Lull with the Nordy SC PU's Adrian. You can always swap them out for Nordy NJ5SV's that are hum cancelling if the hum bothers you. I've been chatting with Scott Pazera about another Nordy and he thinks the NJ5SV's are soooo close to the standard Nordy SC J style PU's, but without the hum! They could be the magic pill!

I played a Lull when I was in Seattle last week and found the neck profile and scale length to be completely comfortable.

the lack of a plate was my attempt at letting the wood show in that area, bad enough to cover the pickguard area, but it needs that offset.

My bass doesn't have the wood grain yours does, but I really hated the lack of that chrome plate.......

When I put it on it was like "Ahhhhhhhhh, that's what it should be like!" Though if I was using the clear guard, and my bass had that body, I'd be much more inclined to go sans plate.
