I have been waiting for 2 years. Mike's email also said that the time could extend as his availability to build could change. His availability changed. He was completely out of commision for a while. His ankle had to be replaced. His car needed major repair, that he did. His siter's car needed an engine rebuild. He got the opportunity to be the director of the Cinci Blues fest. The guy is building my bass for about half the cost, if not less, than others I checked out. He has been up front with me on everything. I'm ok if others view me as naive. I agreed to be of less importance than his own concerns and I'm ok with honoring that.
In the interests of absolute transparency. There are two, one-sided facebook chats missing that would complete our communication in its ENTIRETY since Jun 29 2012
Once was three posts by me over 4-5 days asking if he had received my emails/wall posts. The other was me talking to myself when I thought he said we would facebook chat at 8am, not 8pm.
I would also like to clear up, that any "financial issues" are dead in the water. I am quite comfortable financially. As you will see in my email from early July (I think), it should say that when I asked or a ETA, my finances would have to be considered. Simply meaning, if I'm going to get a $1500 bill, I'd like to know when, so I can direct funds that way.
There are a gut load of emails and facebook chat since this "deal" began.
I started at the end of July for reasons stated - both parties were happy with the situation until then.
I requested 4 things, which he could have given me that would have put a lid on all of this.
I even said another 6-9 months or completion would be fine if he gave me date.
And I'm out...

This isn't about stepsworkforme, he's entitled to his point of view, and he has more relative experience than most of us do here. I respect him for giving an honest opinion in spite of it going against the grain.
I was struck most by the email exchanges at how many words were being traded but how little communication was really happening. It seems to me that the builder has decided to not give a damn and just do what HE feels is right, but a situation like this needs compromise and communication.

Regardless, its a terrible way of doing business. Making a bit of money on material is fine, just about every business out there does this. But before the build even starts, he should make a material list, and labor estimate and give a firm price. If any changes are made by the customer the price can then be adjusted at the time the changes are made.
How many bids would my company win, if we went to a job and told them, the price will be double material with a $25,000 dollar start up fee. We will let you know what material cost after we buy them. If you need it done by a deadline the price will be raised by 75%.
Its an illogical way of doing business, and the only person who can come out ahead in that scenario is Mikeyswood. I would suggest that anybody having a custom bass built should draw up a simple contract agreed upon by both parties involved, and it should be signed by both parties and notarized.
Its sad to say but, I would just not trust spending this kind of money on a hand shake and trusting the person.
We just happen to be working on evaluating tenders for bridge constructions at work at present.
I would seriously die laughing if I had a tender come in on such terms!!!

Oh wow! That was yours, eh? I remember watching that build and thinking that while it seemed a bit awkward to play, it looked so freakin' awesome that I would have played it even if it was filled with lead.
yep it's against the rules so I'm withdrawing it, was fun though to post it, it got all my anger over Alex's issue with this guy out. Now I'm calm and collected again. Ahhhhhh
Not that it necessarily has anything to do with this discussion, but it might be interesting to look up Borderline Personality Disorder. As a general curiosity kinda thing.
Brother, I'm not shying away from advocating I just don't think it's my place. Neither party has asked me to participate in any way. Again, I don't see the contract as voided. I just see major communication issues and frustration that I believe could be lined out with cool heads and compromise. That's just me though.

As for communication issues, the insist entirely of one party trying to communicate, and the other actively ignoring. This is fact. A willingness to communicate by the other party would have brokered a happy resolution some time ago. I honestly would have been a happy camper to work on the same terms you are, IF they had have been communicated. IF I hadn't been left wondering what was going on.
As for the compromise you speak of, I think you will agree that the only compromise made will be made by me, on the builders terms. Mike firmly stated his position in our Facebook chat, and I expect it not to change.
I think his firm stance is also why he has refrained from posting in this thread.
His position is clear. Shame it wasn't 24, 18, 12, 6 or (especially) 3 months ago.
