It is hard to keep track of things. No one can be expected to do it all. Do subscribe to the thread. It's the only way to keep this going.

Thanks again for hosting, Tim. Someone (PaganJack or lonote) once said they have a DarkStar equipped Ibanez Artcore bass. I'm dying to hear that thing.

I'm trying to sell/trade these bass guitars local. I thought I'd post a link here. (I hope that's okay) I figured someone here might like the fender accoustic, its nice.

I need a new head, and I have cash.

IF anyone is interested in these basses and is not local to the Twin Cities, I'm more than willing to test play them.. verify the neck/action/electronics and do the intonation...

If I remember correctly the Vantage is a good cult bass.. any of these are good "I don't care about them" basses.. I have a few.. it is nice to hand them to a kid.. leave them at a practice space.. or test funky strings.

Anything to help a regional bass god.

Ditto.. have thought of an semi acoustic bass for a long time.

Just don't bring it with a for sale sign.. chances are I'll be adopting it...

Thanks Tim, you're the man.

Can anyone recommend a luthier in the metro area? Preferably in the south metro.

I'm looking to have my frets leveled (I think).

Hoffman's seems expensive, but if I'd go there, is it worth it? It's an $800 bass, so...

Anywhere else?

For things like this, I take them to Capitol Guitars (www.CapitolGuitars.com) 651-225-8888

Tell Eric "Timmy" sent you - they'll give you some preferencial treatment - I commonly have 1 or 2 of my basses in there being corrected.

Reason for them is they do stuff in house (Eric).. they have an arrangement with a Luthier who visits them 1x per week.

They're the only shop in town that I can tell "STRAIGHT NECK - ZERO RELIEF - Dress the 12+ frets" and they do it EXACTLY the way I ask for an affordable budget. Most folks in town do not understand that it's more effective for me to set intonation and action then them guessing what I like.

Hoffman is great - they only touch my $5000+ basses.

Timmy

Great.. if you need funky wiring or something custom, let him know I'll bring in an example from my collection.

NOTE - I believe their contract Luthier shows up on Thursday - it is a good plan to bring it by tonight.

Tim

PS I order my freak strings from them. They're the only shop in town that will research what's available and order them in. I just received thin guage GHS tapes.. I believe the total cost was equal to what Carvin charges. .. most shops will just shrug their shoulders and point to the rack..... the GHS are exactly what my Kelly needed.

You have one of the finest in the US in your own back yard. On old So. Concord St. Between 110 and 55 along the Miss. river. One hell of a nice guy too. His brother is a jazz drummer also. Check out his basses. Up and coming!!! That address is hard to find.Very hidden for being in the cities. Call him first, for directions.

Check it out! He not only fixes and repairs but makes his own and makes them cook!
Been in music his whole life. Grew up in a family of accordian, and concertina makers, by New Ulm, Mn. Super guy. Glad to be a freind of his. His brother James Brown, the jazz drummer, owns Superior Tool, in Superior Wisc, up by me. It's a CNC machine shop, where he makes the guitar building and repairing tools, designed by the brothers.

I've heard good things about Browns Guitar Factory's work as well. They come highly recommended for repair work.

On that note, there are a couple of their basses at a little shop called solidbodyguitars.com in Mounds View. They specialize in vintage uber expensive guitars mainly but they also have Phil Jones bass amps and the BGF basses there. The Phil Jones stuff was interesting but I wasn't impressed by the price or the lows it put out.

The Browns Guitar basses were very well made and the fretted/fretless thing is interesting. I picked a couple up and they were fairly heavy but well balanced. I put them back down when I heard the price.

Does anyone know of any other bass builders around here? The ones I know about are:
ToneSmith guitars -> http://www.tonesmith.com
Benedict -> Link Removed
Ecliptic basses -> Link Removed
Browns Guitar Factory -> http://www.brownsguitarfactory.com/

I haven't seen any of them in person except for the BGF ones. I'm thinking of building my own someday when I have free time.

Willie's had something built by "Patterson" once. It looked really nice. I don't know anything about the builder (possibly including correct spelling) except that they were local. If I were somebody who went for instruments that look boutique, I'd have been in total lust.
